About Fitzroy Legal Service

Delivering community driven justice since 1972, Fitzroy Legal Service (FLS) works towards a fairer and more just Victorian community, one in which the legal and broader social systems support equality and justice. FLS does this by empowering communities who are disproportionately impacted by law and policy, and who face systemic barriers to accessing justice due to poverty, race, gender identity, and disability.

FLS provides multidisciplinary outreach programs to communities of colour, economic disadvantage, homelessness, LGBTIQA+, domestic violence and drug dependency. Harnessing the knowledge of these communities, FLS champions community driven justice and works to change unfair laws and systems.

About the role

As the Chief Executive Officer, you will lead a committed and talented team with the support of a highly engaged and professionally skilled Board. You will be responsible for driving the 2025 Strategic Plan, as well as working to shape the next strategy.

You will build on the solid financial position of FLS, strengthen existing services and programs, and explore new business opportunities to ensure long term financial sustainability and grow our impact. This will include maintaining and diversifying public, private and philanthropic funds. Importantly, you will build collaborative relationships at all levels of the organisation, ensuring staff are engaged around decision making and contributing towards the future strategic direction of FLS.

As CEO you will actively demonstrate and live the values of FLS in your day-to-day, as well as in the way you lead externally. You will play an integral role in increasing the public profile and impact of FLS through advocacy and community engagement and continue to build collaborative working relationships with sector partners, our alumni and government.

You will advocate for our specialist LQBTIQA+ service, Q+Law, and make space for self-determined leadership of this state-wide legal service for LGBTIQA+ communities. You will champion sector wide change, to enable community legal centres to become more accessible and cost effective for the communities they serve, including through technology and digital innovation.

You will drive strong working relationships with partners and expand our sector network to ensure staff are connected and supported in their work. Leading a passionate and highly skilled team, you will encourage an engaged culture and healthy workplace where people are valued and developed. You will be seen as a respected leader by staff and the Board, providing trusted and transparent advice.

Key requirements

Key to your success in this role will be your demonstrated familiarity with the social justice sector. You will understand justice systems, legal policy and law reform, and have experience driving change in social justice or aligned sectors.

Direct experience in the legal assistance sector, with an understanding of the unique value and operating context of community legal centres, will be highly regarded.

You will already be recognised as an authentic, collaborative and people-focused leader. Importantly, you are driven by your own personal values of social justice, integrity, inclusion and respect – and you are motivated by driving change and better outcomes for the community. Formal qualifications as a Lawyer would be highly regarded but not essential.

This is an incredible opportunity for an ambitious and passionate individual to drive forward the current strategy to continue to ensure exceptional legal services for the communities FLS supports.
