The Organisation

As Australia’s peak national organisation for the community HIV response, Health Equity Matters supports member organisations working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex communities, people living with HIV, sex workers, people who use drugs, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Through advocacy, policy, and health promotion it leads Australia’s effort to end HIV transmission and promote the health of its communities.

Health Equity Matters close connections with its communities provides rapid intelligence on changes in Australia’s HIV epidemic and LGBTIQA+ health, providing a unified voice to mobilise and respond quickly, and to act as a trusted communication channel to government, research, and clinical partners.

In the APAC region, Health Equity Matters uses the same strengths to promote effective policy, strengthen local community leadership, and support communities in their work in HIV, health and human rights.

The Role

The CEO has overall accountability for leadership, planning and evaluation, providing strategic advice to support the board in its decision-making and attaining the highest standards of governance. You will lead Australia’s community response to HIV and promote LGBTIQA+ health, ensuring a respected voice in forums and contributing to the regional and global dialogue and programs.

You will provide executive leadership to the senior management team, creating and sustaining an organisational culture of performance excellence that is resolute in its focus on virtual elimination of HIV transmission, and ensuring all its communities can live a full and healthy life.

You’ll ensure the human, financial and knowledge resources are managed effectively, meeting legal and contractual obligations. In an environment where growth is essential for sustainability you will increase and diversify revenue through strategic partnerships and new ventures.

Skills Required

You are currently a senior executive at either CEO or director level with a career and reputation as an inspirational leader in community focused sectors including HIV, LGBTIQA+, public or primary health, human rights, and social justice.

Your community leadership skills are at the core of your career and you identify with and have a strong understanding of the needs of Health Equity Matters’ communities. Specifically, you will have;

  • Experience in strategic leadership and organisational and sector development
  • Excellent political astuteness and advocacy skills
  • Strong relationship building and stakeholder engagement
  • A track record in ensuring organisational governance and financial sustainability
  • Outstanding communication capability, including media and corporate communications
  • Postgraduate qualifications or significant experience in policy, management or public health
