About Lowitja Institute

Lowitja Institute is Australia’s only national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled health research institute, named in honour of the late Dr Lowitja O’Donoghue AC CBE DSG. As the premier Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisation, Lowitja Institute works for the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through high impact quality research, knowledge exchange, and by supporting a new generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health researchers.

About the role

The CEO will work closely with the Chairperson and Board in setting and executing the Strategic Plan for Lowitja Institute. The CEO will grow, lead and inspire a highly capable team to deliver on the priorities of the organisation. As the Institute’s primary spokesperson, the CEO will communicate with strength, integrity and influence across a range of audiences and settings.

About you

The ideal candidate will exemplify resilient leadership qualities, with the proven capability to lead while delivering complex outcomes effectively. You will be passionate about leading Lowitja Institute in continuing its commitment to pursuing a new generation of solutions that make a real difference to the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. You will have broad stakeholder capabilities with demonstrated experience navigating community and government with extensive experience in and understanding of Aboriginal affairs policy, legislation, and frameworks, including best practices in health and social service delivery.

Key Requirements

  1. Superior knowledge and understanding of matters concerning the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples with a demonstrated understanding of cultural safety to foster a culturally safe environment.
  2. Proven ability to work effectively with Boards, including proven capability to develop strategy and discipline to deliver successful business development outcomes.
  3. Extensive experience working in complex, multi-stakeholder environments with a track record in strong team leadership that delivers measurable outcomes.
  4. High-level knowledge of governance, financial, and risk management, evidenced by appropriate tertiary qualifications and relevant experience.
