About the organisation

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Corporation (NATSIEC) is the national peak body representing Indigenous Education. NATSIEC members are Indigenous Education Consultative Bodies. In 2018 the IECBs raised the importance of establishing a community-controlled national peak body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education. In 2023, NATSIEC was established as the peak, independent, community controlled national voice on Aboriginal Education. NATSIEC was endorsed by Education Ministers in February 2023 to provide a direct First Nations Voice mechanism. NATSIEC is a member of the Coalition of Peaks and recognised as the authority voice in Aboriginal Education. The body is sponsored by the Australian Government Department of Education and is registered with ORIC.

About the role

The CEO reports directly to the NATSIEC board, providing strategic leadership and advice to deliver its Strategic Plan and Partnership Agreement. The position has primary responsibility for the effective leadership and management of the organisation to ensure that NATSIEC is a leader in shaping and advocating education policy. The position is responsible for ensuring that NATSIEC is the Voice for Aboriginal Education to the government and the education sector. The CEO will represent NATSIEC in advocating for Aboriginal Education and also in the media.

The position operates with a high degree of autonomy to achieve results in an environment that is frequently changing, complex and presents issues that are often politically sensitive and require innovative and sensitive solutions.

About you

You will have a strong track record in policy development, influencing and negotiating in the Education sectors, and be dedicated and passionate about using your leadership capabilities to implement the NATSIEC Operational Plan and to improve the education outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You will have senior level leadership expertise across stakeholder management, advocacy and representation, operations management and strategy development.

Your skills will be shaped by a Degree in Education or related area, and/or your relevant work experience will show your competencies are developed to the level required for this new appointment.

You will be able to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic and new environment and oversee programs of change management across the organisation and sector. You’ll be a conceptual and strategic thinker who can deliver outcomes. You will be highly regarded as a leader with judgement, political acumen and excellent governance skills. Your stakeholder engagement capabilities will be strongly developed, particularly your capability to influence stakeholders at all levels.

Key Requirements

  1. Exceptional leadership capabilities in strategic and policy development in the Education sector.
  2. Stakeholder engagement is of a high standard, and this is shown through communication style, ability to influence and a track record of positive engagement with government.
  3. Innovative problem-solving capabilities.
  4. Ability to advocate for NATSIEC and develop policies that can be translated to results for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups working to advance opportunities engagement with Education.
  5. Strong passion for Education and an ability to quickly analyse and unpack policy and communicate key messages to NATSIEC members and the Board.
  6. Tertiary qualifications Education or related area.
