The UNICEF Child Protection Section in Lao PDR, aligned with the global equity agenda, is focused on strengthening child protection systems to combat violence, exploitation, and abuse, particularly child marriage. They are enhancing national and community-level mechanisms, emphasizing support for vulnerable children, including those without parental care, with disabilities, affected by disasters, or from impoverished families. Laos faces frequent climate crisis emergencies, heightening risks for these children. To bolster their efforts, UNICEF Lao PDR seeks support in implementing the National Action Plan for Child Protection System Strengthening and establishing a robust child protection information management system, addressing key issues like child marriage and protection in emergencies.

 

As Child Protection Officer you support the Child Protection Section in Vientiane by providing the following:

  • Technical support, programme management, monitoring and quality control of results, partnership building to address early/child marriage and adolescent pregnancy.
  • Technical support toward implementation of the National Plan of Action for Child Protection System Strengthening (NPA CPSS), with attention to vulnerable women and children who are at risk of child marriage, adolescent pregnancy and violence.
  • Technical Support to establish Child Protection Information System (CPIMS) for systematic child protection data management.
  • Support to programme planning, implementation and documentation.

 

Part of the Swiss JPO Programme, this position is sponsored by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC of the FDFA. Only Swiss Nationals are eligible to apply.

Skills required

For the Swiss JPO programme:

  • Swiss nationality
  • Not older than 32 years at the date of the first round of interviews
  • Fluency in English and a second UN language
  • Master’s degree  
  • Strong interest in a longer-term career with the United Nations 

 

For this position:

  • Master’s degree in one of the following fields is required: Social Science, Social Work, Human rights, International Law, Development Studies, social and behavioral science or other related fields.
  • 3 years of professional experience in one or more of the following areas is required: child and/or social development programme planning/implementation/monitoring, social work, child/family laws or another related area. Experience is counted at 100%, if gained after completion of the first university degree (including internships and volunteering).
  • Relevant experience in a UN system agency or organization is considered as an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required.  Knowledge of another official UN language or local language of the duty station is considered as an asset.
