Clean Streams Coordinator

The Clean Streams Coordinator will monitor specific stream locations across Fairfax County, and help create and present programs to inform Fairfax County residents and businesses about litter and plastic pollution in our ecosystem and its cost and impacts on our streams, wild places, oceans and personal health. 

This is currently a PART TIME POSITION that has the possibility of becoming full time. While the hours are flexible, there may be a few times per quarter when evening and weekend hours will be required. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with Fairfax County staff to set monitoring, clean up, and education goals based on the County’s annual MS4 permit.
  • Conduct quarterly field-based data collection at each monitored location. Enter data into databases, create basic maps, and perform preliminary analysis.
  • Serve as a subject-matter expert on litter and other environmental and sustainability topics, representing the organization at meetings and presentations as needed.
  • Contribute to annual reporting and grant proposals as needed.
  • Perform primary and secondary research to gather information and draw conclusions about litter, plastic, and other environmental and sustainability issues in Fairfax County.
  • Collaborate to develop effective outreach and education communications to a variety of audiences.
  • Attend relevant meetings as directed by supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies or Science, Public Policy, Public Administration, Education, or combination of 3 years of work experience and education in applicable areas
  • Fluent in English speaking, reading, and writing
  • Flexible schedule (occasional evenings and weekends necessary)
  • Highly computer literate (Microsoft Office Suite, ArcGIS Online, Power BI, Google Workspace, or equivalent)
  • GIS Mapping
  • Able to work independently
  • Strong research skills
  • Comfort and ease with public speaking (or willing to learn)
  • Able to walk and stand for moderate periods of time, often through the woods and along rocky streams
  • Strong Interest in Environmental Advocacy, Education and/or Enforcement
  • Valid US Drivers License and reliable transportation
  • Knowledge of Northern Virginia Region
  • Legally able to work in the United States
  • Ability to write for and speak to different audiences (scientific reports, newsletter articles, fact sheets, legislators, students, businesses)

Preferred:

  • Previous experience with environmental monitoring and reporting specific to stormwater, water quality, litter prevention or other environmental area
  • Non profit office administration (ie., graphic design, grant writing and reporting)
  • Content management for website and social media (including photography/video skills)
  • Fluent in other languages
  • Interest in environmental legislation and policy work
