Description

As Climate and Long-Term Action and Knowledge Exchange Officer, you will maximise the contribution of European Earth Observation infrastructure and science with an emphasis on ESA’s research and development programmes led by the Climate and Long-Term Action Division.

 

You will provide support and advice on knowledge exchange while developing and delivering a communication strategy to encourage the use of ESA climate data products and knowledge as a contribution to ESA’s Earth Observation Programme. The target audiences for communication and knowledge exchange include the climate science and modelling communities, climate policy makers, business, civil society, and the general public.

 

Your will report to the Head of the Climate and Long-term Action Division.

Duties

Your tasks will include:

 

  • contributing to ESA’s knowledge exchange and public communication on Earth Observation through regular liaison, coordination and collaboration with the ESA corporate communication and media relations teams to facilitate the exploitation of climate-relevant science and information;
  • developing a knowledge exchange and communication strategy and annual activity plans, taking into account user requirements, while learning from previous knowledge exchange procurements and addressing the priorities of the Climate and Long-term Action Division,
  • organising events, workshops and conferences to provide high-quality communication and networking opportunities, in line with the goal of expanding the awareness, utilisation and scientific impact of EO data for climate research and applications;
  • identifying and developing collaborative partnerships to raise awareness of the role of satellite data in addressing climate change within both technical and public audiences;
  • as part of the above, maintaining links with ESA Member States and international partner organisations, and coordinating with them on relevant activities;
  • establishing a dialogue with specialised user communities from the scientific, public, policy and educational sectors, analysing their needs for satellite-based observations of the climate system, and assessing their feedback;
  • in particular, ensuring that ESA maintains a visible profile in the UK through active collaboration with UK EO/climate research/education organisations such as Space4Climate, NCEO, UKSTEM; exhibiting and speaking at national conferences; and contributing to ECSAT/Harwell campus communication activities;
  • communicating on ESA activities that are relevant to climate user communities and policymakers, including:
    • evolving the content provided on the Division’s webpage;
    • producing up-to-date case studies, articles, narratives and visual assets (e.g. infographics, animations and explainer videos);
    • managing, developing and deploying visualisation tools (such as the interactive globe, touch table and web applications) to raise awareness of the value of satellite climate data;
    • producing and maintaining briefings, speaker notes, presentation materials and other publications to ensure the consistent, effective and clear communication of ESA climate data availability results and impact.
  • managing and continuously improving the digital presence of the data sets produced in the Climate and Long-Term Action Division;
  • managing the ESA brand to ensure consistency of key messages and style across all materials;
  • managing contractor support to deliver and fully achieve the knowledge exchange and communication objectives.

Technical competencies

Knowledge of climate science and modelling as well as remote sensing, particularly with regard to ESA programmes with a focus on climate (e.g. CCI, GDA, etc.)
Knowledge of the international climate network, including UNFCCC, IPCC, EU DGs, GCOS, WCRP, CEOS, CGMS, GEO, etc.
Knowledge of international and national climate policies and programmes

Education

A PhD in an Earth Science-related topic is required for this post.

Additional requirements

You should have at least five years of experience in working in an international environment focused on climate issues, and have an in-depth background in Earth Observation knowledge exchange and communication.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
