Sustainable Peace Foundation (SPF) is an Iraqi Non-governmental Organisation (NGO) striving to build and sustain peace through vertical and horizontal approaches and participatory methods; addressing root causes of tensions and conflicts challenging positive peace in Iraq. SPF strives to achieve this by working on the grassroots level to reinstate and strengthen the lost trust between Iraq’s diverse ethno-religious communities; increase community resilience, empower and building the capacities of the very effected communities so they can mitigate and transform conflicts through dialogue and non-violent means.

SPF strives to achieve these objectives by working with vulnerable groups such as, youth, women and girls, people with special needs and IDPs through developing their capacities to take leadership roles and to actively participate in the peace and reconciliation processes; economically empower communities by offering them vocational trainings and providing them with livelihood means to ensure stability and a dignified living standard.

SPF also strives to engage local authority and security actors with the local communities through advocacy, round table dialogue sessions and developing local peace mechanisms and structures capable to acts as soundboards conveying their communities’ needs and challenges. Another pillar of SPF’s efforts is to support and capacitate Iraq’s civil society for example, SPF provide the technical coordination and the secretariat of Nineveh Peace Forum, which it is a founder.  

SPF also provides consultations for local and international NGOs on peacebuilding and social cohesion programming, such as: context analysis, needs assessments, actor and service mapping etc.

SPF’s focuses on minority protection, but through its Do-no-Harm approach, which ensures that SPF programming and implementation creates cohesion instead of doing harm.

Project Aims:

The Blue Peace project aims to address climate-induced conflicts and environmental challenges in Nineveh Governorate by:

  • Empowering local communities and stakeholders to collaboratively address climate change and environmental issues.
  • Promoting resilience and peacebuilding through inclusive participation, capacity building, and advocacy.
  • Engaging local and federal authorities, civil society organisations, and international actors to prioritise and address climate change challenges and conflicts.

 

Duties and Assignments:

  1. Develop training materials on climate change mitigation strategies.
  2. Design workshop modules focused on transforming climate-induced conflicts.
  3. Prepare advocacy strategies and techniques for the workshop.
  4. Conduct a 3-day training workshop for selected community members (16 participants: 50% women and 50% men).
  5. Engage participants in interactive sessions to enhance understanding and application of training content.
  6. Provide post-training support and follow-up with participants to ensure the implementation of learned strategies.
  7. Document the training process and outcomes for reporting and evaluation purposes.

Terms of Reference:

The trainer will work under the supervision of the Sustainable Peace Foundation (SPF)’s Project Manager and in collaboration with project partners. The main objective is to equip selected community members with the knowledge and skills to effectively address climate change challenges and transform climate-induced conflicts. The trainer will be responsible for:

  • Developing comprehensive training materials tailored to the specific needs of the community.
  • Conducting a 3-day workshop that includes theoretical and practical components.
  • Ensuring that the training is inclusive and considers equality and justice between men and women sensitivity and cultural contexts.
  • Facilitating discussions and activities that promote active participation and engagement.
  • Providing recommendations and guidance for participants to apply the training in their communities.
  • Preparing a detailed report on the training, including participant feedback and potential areas for improvement.

Qualifications & Preferred Skills

 

  1. Educational Background:
  • A degree in Environmental Science, Climate Change, Conflict Resolution, Advocacy, or a related field.
  • Experience:
    • Proven experience in conducting training workshops, especially in climate change mitigation and conflict transformation.
    • At least 3-5 years of experience working in environmental advocacy or climate-related projects.
    • Experience working with diverse communities, particularly in conflict-affected areas.
  • Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of climate change issues and mitigation strategies.
    • Excellent facilitation and communication skills.
    • Ability to design and deliver engaging and effective training modules.
    • Strong advocacy and conflict transformation skills.
    • Cultural sensitivity and the ability to work with diverse groups.
    • Proficiency in using digital tools for training and reporting.
  • Language:
    • Fluency in Arabic is a prerequisite. Knowledge of English is an advantage.
