Do you have a Postgraduate level degree in climate science, environmental science, Anthropology, Natural Resource Management, Social science, or a subject closely related to environment and climate change?

 

Do you have experience in maintaining liaison with different stakeholders, donors, and government agencies to create a civic space and thus promote the JET movement and other people-centric participatory approaches?

The Role:

 

Oxfam in Bangladesh aims to contribute to climate justice through Thought Leadership. The primary purpose of the position is to provide specialist support to the CJNRR programme in implementing sub-thematic strategies under climate action. The position is expected to support the Thematic Head to position Oxfam as a Thought Leader in the climate spectrum. As part of the thought leadership, implementation of the CJNRRs sub-thematic strategies, and addressing the CJNRRs Country Operational Plan (COP), the position is expected to support the project development under the programme development needs of the CJNRR. Moreover, the position will coordinate a strong CSO movement against climate inequalities with Oxfam partners, affiliates, youths, women’s rights organizations, Trade Unions, and other stakeholders through innovation and wider engagement. 

We are looking for someone who can facilitate OiBD’s climate inequality and climate actions at the country level. S/He will be responsible for analyzing global and national level climate policies to provide necessary data, information, and insights to the CJNRR thematic head to help facilitate tracking and course-correct OiBD’s climate interventions. The specialist role will play a crucial role in advocating for the rights of workers and industry affiliate stakeholders to ensure a just transition in the industrial sector towards a low-carbon economy. This includes promoting equitable access to clean energy financing mechanisms, securing jobs for vulnerable workers, and addressing policy barriers that may arise from non-inclusive climate actions. In addition to that, as part of the extent, the position is also expected to find other priority intervention areas aligning climate movements and grower communities’ rights. 

This is a fixed-term position, mainly based in the Dhaka Office with possible field visits as required. Therefore, a similar experience of facilitating climate actions, projects, and programmes targeting RMG industries, growers’ communities, food systems, etc. is desired. If you have experience in leading climate advocacy-related project, this Climate Policy Specialist role would be a big instrumental opportunity for you in driving sustainable development, tackling climate change, and ensuring a fair and equitable transition for all.

 

What we are looking for:

We are looking for someone who has the ability to facilitate OiBD’s climate inequality, climate actions and Just Energy Transition (JET) works at the country level. S/He will be responsible for analysing global and national level climate policies to provide necessary data, information, and insights to the CJNRR thematic head to help facilitate tracking and course-correct OiBDs climate action and JET interventions. The specialist role will play a crucial role in advocating for the rights of workers and industry affiliate stakeholders to ensure a just transition in the industrial sector towards a low-carbon economy.

In addition, an ideal candidate will also have:

  • Postgraduation level degree in, climate science, environmental science, anthropology, natural resource management, social science, law and public policy, or a closely related subject.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in projects preferably on climate justice, policy advocacy, and JET (Just Energy Transition).
  • Proficiency and strong skills in research, publications, and positionings will be considered assets.
  • Sound understanding of Bangladesh’s context of climate justice, climate mitigation, energy transition, and industrial sustainability-related global discussions, and policies.
  • Previous experience on working with international counterparts, at global and regional level will be considered as the added advantage.
  • Good understanding of stakeholder relationships in the development sector.
  • Excellent writing capacity in English and Bangla, skill in MS Office, and excellent presentation skills.
  • Understanding of the inclusion and motivation to work for securing the rights of worker and grower communities.
  • Strong understanding and updated knowledge on the historical and current climate change developments, data, agreements, and policies at the national, regional, and global levels.
