Context

As the United Nations lead agency on international development, UNDP works in 170 countries and territories to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality. UNDP help countries to develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities, and to build resilience to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Our work is concentrated in three focus areas: sustainable development, democratic governance and peace building, and climate and disaster resilience.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) established its presence in Georgia in 1993. For nearly 30 years on the ground, UNDP focuses on promoting national development jointly with the Georgian Government. With an annual programmatic budget of about USD 30 million, UNDP works closely with the Government of Georgia to boost reforms, develop new strategies, promote inclusive economic development, and assist in achieving national priorities. UNDP also works with civil society, including non-governmental organizations, academia and media, and with private sector to promote public-private partnerships.

Project Background: UNDP’s Climate Promise has been supporting the development of LT-LEDS across the globe, including responding to the NDC Partnership’s latest thematic support offering. To date, Climate Promise has supported the updating of 111 more ambitious NDCs and 19 LTS worldwide. In line with the above mentioned, in 2024 UNDP Georgia will be supporting government of Georgia in updating NDC 3.0 to align with GST1.0 results, as well as develop communication and Stakeholder engagement strategy to apply whole-of-society approach for NDCs elaboration, which will contribute to the following outcome/output of Global UNDP’S CLIMATE PROMISE: FROM PLEDGE TO IMPACT (Award 00148067 under H70).

Task description

Under the direct supervision of EE Team Leader, the National UN Volunteer Specialist will:
 Assist EE portfolio with the implementation of the CP Work Plan 2024, including organizing hiring of team of experts, planning for the expected works, monitoring and reporting to the UNDP CP Global team;
 Contribute to the process of NDC update through close cooperation with the partner organization and/or individual consultants, as well as key stakeholders (Parliament and Ministries of Environmental Protection and Agriculture (MEPA) and Economy and Sustainable Development (MoESD);
 Contribute to the planning and assist with the implementation of awareness raising and media outreach campaigns and events related to NDC update process and CP Work Plan implementation;
 Liaison with the UNDP’s communications team on media coverage and outreach events, including drafting of relevant briefing notes, summaries, or inputs for press releases;
 Assist with the coordination and stakeholder engagement during the development of NDC 3.0;
 Contribute to drafting the briefing notes / talking points based on the data collected from relevant partners and stakeholders;
 Provide technical support to organize project-related events (such as 3 sectoral stakeholder meetings and 2 public consultation meetings);
 Attend all events organized by partner organizations and/or individual consultants and local counterparts and prepare briefings / summaries, as required
 Perform other duties as required based on the ongoing needs.
Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:
 Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
 Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
 Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities;
 Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
 Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
 Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
