Clinical Advisor for Mental Health – Consultant

Summary:

CVT is currently seeking a Consultant to provide clinical leadership and support for its operations in Tigray and Amhara regions, Ethiopia, for a six-month period (start date anticipated to be March 1, 2025) with the possibility of extension.

Across all projects the Clinical Advisor provides clinical programmatic oversight; supervises and supports mental health experts including Psychotherapist/Trainers, Resilience Programming Trainers, and MHPSS Specialists; develops specialized MHPSS material including curriculum, clinical intervention manuals, and guidelines; conducts training both in-person and online; conducts program monitoring and evaluation activities; provides technical input in new program and proposal development; contributes to recruitment of relevant positions, and collaborates with other project team members.

In CVT’s programs in Ethiopia, the Clinical Advisor provides clinical oversight, supervision, and support with the goal of strengthening CVT’s interdisciplinary trauma rehabilitation program for refugee, IDP, and returnee survivors of torture and other human rights atrocities.

Job Responsibilities:

-Hiring and Clinical Supervision: Participate in the hiring process of Psychotherapist/Trainers, Resilience Programming Trainers, MHPSS specialists and other senior staff who work in international programs. Participate in orientation before assignment begins. Conduct ongoing clinical supervision/coaching and mentoring. Observe clinical activities/trainings and provide feedback to staff. Complete performance reviews and assist in professional development planning by recommending training, readings and other opportunities. Provide confidential debriefing to ensure they are coping with the work and any contextual challenges.

-Clinical Programmatic Oversight: Ensure quality delivery of clinical services. Oversee and monitor progress of programmatic activities to ensure achievement of projects’ goals and integrity of services provided. Conduct initial and ongoing assessments of clinical components of projects, including knowledge, clinical capacity, service models and staff care. Conduct periodic site visits. Recommend changes in program activities, design and staffing, as needed, and support implementation of changes. Oversee the tailoring of interventions to context and/or the development of new interventions relevant to emerging needs. Promote collaboration among all stakeholders, facilitate communication and serve as a liaison.

-Consultation and Training:Oversee methods for knowledge-sharing and skill-building by developing and/or collaborating on the creation of clinical curriculum. Document curriculum and develop manuals/clinical guidelines. Conduct trainings in person, online and at workshops.

-Reporting and Documentation: Prepare reports that document progress on assigned projects. Generate reports that fulfill obligations of funders. Document knowledge gained through the projects.

-New Project Development: Provide clinical input in the development and design of new international projects. Participate in assessment trips. Assist in developing proposals.

-Other Duties: Participate in project team, department and organization-wide activities, meetings and trainings. Provide clinical input on advocacy initiatives. Complete administrative responsibilities. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

  • MA in Clinical or Counseling Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical Social Work or related field.
  • 5 years experience providing psychotherapy to survivors of trauma using individual, group and community-based approaches.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring clinical staff members.
  • Experience developing and delivering in-person and online training.

Preferred education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

  • Doctorate in Clinical or Counseling Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical Social Work or related field.
  • Clinical experience with torture survivors.
  • Experience in project management.
  • International work experience with local or international NGOs.
  • Experience in supporting partner organizations through capacity building initiatives.
  • Experience conducting remote clinical supervision/coaching and mentoring.
  • Experience in addressing gender and social inclusion related issues

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Understanding of and experience developing curriculum in clinical psychology and delivering training for mental health professionals who possess varying levels of knowledge in program locations. Knowledge of diverse training methods and designs.
  • Understanding and experience developing trauma-informed and/or psychosocial approaches to individual and organizational well-being.
  • Demonstrate skills in effective project implementation and management.
  • Demonstrate cross-cultural competencies
  • Demonstrated flexibility to changing requirements and needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of an interactive team.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word and Excel).
  • Interest in or commitment to human rights.
  • Commitment to the ethical and sensitive implementation of project activities, including a commitment to confidentiality, diversity, equity, and inclusion, quality service provision, and the prevention of sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment (including online).
  • Fluency in at least one language in addition to English.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Clinical supervision/coaching and mentoring of field-based Psychotherapst/Trainers, Resilience Programming Trainers, MHPSS Specialists and/or partner MHPSS staff

Work Environment:

  • Typical office environment.
  • Time spent on the computer is approximately 80%.
  • Time spent in virtual meetings is approximately 35%

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office supplies and equipment, up to 20 pounds.

Travel: Ability to travel up to 30% of the time, including internationally to low resource and conflict and disaster affected countries. Some work sites may be located in politically unstable areas with limited amenities.
