Job Description Summary:
The Clinical Assistant Professor teaches on campus and online courses offered by the Department of Health Information Management (HIM) to undergraduate students in the Bachelor of Science degree program, as well as two minor programs, offered through the KU School of Health Professions (SHP) Department of HIM. This position reports to the Chair of HIM in the KU SHP. The selected candidate will focus primarily on teaching but is also expected to provide service and/or scholarly contributions to the department, school, university, and/or the industry. Courses assigned are determined based on the needs of the department, but may include coursework in introductory concepts in HIM, quality and performance improvement in healthcare, reimbursement and finance, health information systems, and management, as examples. This position requires a high level of accountability and professionalism, as well as an ability to work effectively with diverse individuals. Academic rank, salary, and tenure/non-tenure status are dependent on the education and experience of the selected candidate.

Required Qualifications
Education/Credentials:

Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential

Master’s degree in a related discipline such as HIM, informatics, business, healthcare administration, education, or similar.
Work Experience:
-
3 years of experience in healthcare and/or higher education work settings
-
Demonstrated experience using various forms of technology
Preferred Qualifications
Education: Doctoral degree
Work Experience:

Prior higher education experience, including on campus and online teaching as well as participating in curriculum development

Familiarity with online course technologies such as learning management systems and lecture capture systems

Evidence of previous scholarship such as article publication and/or research

Evidence of professional service to the HIM profession such as volunteerism with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), component state associations of AHIMA, or other relevant professional associations

Job Description/Duties
Teach undergraduate courses
-
Develop, revise, and teach undergraduate HIM courses, to include on campus and online sections of courses. Supplement course delivery with timely insight into industry expectations, practices, and norms. Clearly explain concepts to diverse learners. Set up courses in learning management systems in accordance with HIM departmental standards.
Manage on campus and online classrooms
-
Meet the needs of all students, perform with ease in high pressure situations, deescalate issues among students, refer students to appropriate resources, and facilitate a positive classroom environment.
Conduct unbiased evaluation of student work
-
Conduct consistent assessment of student learning and rely on tools such as rubrics for objective scoring. Student work must be assessed in unbiased ways and grading must align with policies stated within course syllabi.
Communicate effectively

Ensure oral and written communication with all stakeholders is unambiguous and provided in a timely manner. Communication must be professional and appropriate for the audience.
Function responsibly as a member of a team

Work as a collegial and communicative member of a team. This position requires ongoing collaboration and communication with colleagues. The selected candidate is expected to use healthy approaches to problem-solving.
