Job description

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has a global team of over 68,000 people to deliver medical humanitarian care in 74 countries. Our teams are made up of medical, non-medical and operational professionals to provide assistance to people in crisis, whether they’re affected by conflict, natural disaster, disease outbreak, or excluded from healthcare.

The Role:

Clinical psychologists at MSF provide vital care for people who have been traumatised in the face of natural disasters, conflict, sexual violence or disease outbreak. They also provide psychological care for patients mentally exhausted from long-term treatment of illnesses such as HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, who have faced discrimination in their community.

They handle counseling training for local psychologists and psychological support volunteers, taking the cultural background of the project country into consideration to provide a flexible, broad range of psychotherapy, including approaches such as cognitive-behavioural therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy.

In some cases, a psychiatrist and a clinical psychologist work together, while in other cases the psychiatrist takes the lead. Most people who receive mental care speak the local language, so counselling is provided through an English- or French-speaking interpreter.
