The mission of the The Halicioglu Data Science Institute (HDSI) is to lay the groundwork for the scientific foundations of the emerging discipline of data science, develop new methods and infrastructure, and train students, faculty and industry partners to use data science in ways that will allow them to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems. HDSI has been established as an independent and innovative academic unit that works collaboratively with schools, divisions, departments, centers, students and faculty across multiple disciplines throughout the entire campus.
HDSI has 22.66 Faculty FTE on board, through a headcount of more than 48 faculty with split appointments in multiple departments. This highly talented data-driven ecosystem of thought leaders is only expected to grow in the coming years. HDSI is the administrative home for the undergraduate B.S. major and minor in Data Science, and three new graduate programs; Master of Data Science Online, MS in Data Science and PhD in Data Science. The undergraduate program has 1,000+ students across our major and minor programs. Our newly launched graduate programs are home to 199 MS students, 44 of which belong to our Online Master of Data Science degree, and 40 PhD students.
The Computational and Data Science Research Specialist 5 will have wide-ranging, extensive experience with computational, computer science, data science, and CI software research and development principles, with relevant domain science knowledge where applicable, performs up to and including the most complex research, technology and software development projects with sitewide, institution-wide and / or multi-institutional scope. They will represent the organization at national and international meetings, conferences and committee and is considered a research and technology expert in multiple aspects of computation, data science, information science, and cyberinfrastructure. The incumbent will advise on and resolves highly complex research and technology projects or issues, direct the design, implementation and selection of new hardware and software technologies for advancing complex HPC, data science, and CI projects as well as present research and technical briefings to senior management, institution-wide, national and international audiences. Additionally, they will contribute to the research and technical direction in one or more technical specialties and perform advanced research and technology development to contribute to design of future HPC, data science, and CI hardware and software systems. As a recognized national expert in CI-heavy, computational and data science offerings, the incumbent will identify gaps in the current ecosystem needed by researchers, suggesting new research data services and strategic competencies to develop. This position will find, initiate, design, and lead/co-lead data intensive research proposals with domain scientists, especially in the geosciences, information, and biomedical sciences. The incumbent will identify, author, and host trainings and workshops to disseminate research and research products, including new platforms and services, as well as to build community and map the science landscape.

Expert knowledge of HPC / data science / CI. Expert knowledge in computational and data science architectures, HTC/HPC architectures, and data science concepts and technologies including machine learning. Expert knowledge of information science topics including semantics, linked data, FAIR, FDOs, as well as related areas such as reproducibility.
Understanding of pedagogical theories and methodologies related to teaching AI concepts. Familiarity with learning styles, educational technologies, and assessment strategies.
Expert skills and experience in independently resolving highly complex computing / data / CI problems using introductory and / or intermediate principles. Expert experience distilling patterns, architectures, use cases, and best practices/methods from data-driven science research challenges.
Expert ability to successfully lead and manage multiple concurrent projects. Excellent research and technology project leadership and management skills.
Proven ability to establish realistic research priorities and lead, motivate and guide colleagues and staff for a sustained effort. Demonstrated ability to align strategy of the Center and institution with national and international research initiatives.
Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
Ability to travel to regional, national, and international meetings, workshops, and conferences, as well as to funding agencies, as needed to accomplish work objectives and to share in representation of the Center in these venues.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $124,400 – $243,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $59.58 – $116.67
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
