The City of Moreton Bay has more than 180km of coastline, adored by our residents and region visitors alike.

Our coastal landscape is the dynamic backdrop to life in and around our foreshores, canals and waterways. Whether it’s our beaches, canals, or the many coastal settlements along our foreshores, people continue to choose Moreton Bay as a place to live, work and visit.

Our coast is highly varied and includes sandy beaches, rocky shorelines, mangrove forests, intertidal marshes and urban foreshores. The City of Moreton Bay must carefully manage our coastal areas, implement coastal erosion protection for vulnerable coastal areas, and plan for the projected impacts of climate change.

About our opportunity

As a Coastal Engineer, you will be a key member of our Coastal Infrastructure team responsible for the planning and design of renewals and upgrades to our coastal assets including seawalls, canals, beaches, jetties and boat ramps. Importantly, you will have the opportunity to be involved in our coastal projects from inception through to completion. In this role you will have opportunity to:

  • Provide specialist technical coastal engineering expertise and undertake investigations for a range of complex coastal infrastructure and coastal management matters.
  • Bring your passion to solving complex coastal management problems and developing strategies to ensure project and community outcomes are met.
  • Be a key advisor within the team and building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, to ensure coastal infrastructure and service delivery outcomes are achieved.
  • Guide and mentor other team members.
  • Influence what the coastal areas of the City of Moreton Bay will look like for future generations.

Examples of the exciting projects you can be involved in include:

The delivery of an innovative design for a seawall renewal at one of our most popular coastal areas; Crockatt Park, Woody Point Crockatt Park – Seawall Renewal.

The Pacific Harbour maintenance dredging project – a major dredging campaign (approx. 75,000m3) at Pacific Harbour on Bribie Island. This campaign will use a 7km pipeline to transport dredged material to Council’s dedicated dredged material management facility at Ningi – a first of its kind for the region.

The Woorim Beach sand back-passing trial. This project intercepts up to 30,000m3 of sand south of Woorim Beach each year and transports the sand via slurry pipeline approximately 2km to the north.. A range of coastal monitoring, including video-based coastal monitoring, has also been implemented to help monitor and determine the long-term effectiveness and viability of sand back-passing.

Implementation of CMB’s Coastal hazard adaptation strategy (Living Coast Plan). Council endorsed Moreton Bay’s Living Coast Plan at its general meeting on 31 May 2023. The plan includes a large array of planning and design works aimed at improving the resilience of our much loved coastal areas to hazards including cyclones and severe storms, erosion, tidal inundation and projected sea level rise.

About you

We are seeking someone who is a technical leader in coastal infrastructure design, with significant knowledge in coastal infrastructure planning and management. You will have a passion for the future of our great City and ensuring the longevity of our assets and infrastructure.

You will bring:

  • Experience in completing complex technical investigations relating to coastal engineering design and coastal zone management. You will have a sound understanding of the legislative framework that regulates the delivery of coastal infrastructure projects.
  • Skilled critical thinking with an ability to reason, evaluate and make decisions. You will bring strong skills regarding the preparation and presentation of complex technical reports and recommendations.
  • Strong communications skills with the ability to engage with a variety of stakeholders both internally and externally. You will have an open approach to sharing knowledge and working to mentor, coach and develop junior engineers and team mates.
