In Burundi, UNICEF has a very diverse portfolio of responsibilities but all with the same objective which is to assist the Government and other stakeholders to fulfill children’s economic, social, cultural, political, and civil rights. The UNICEF country program in Burundi aims to improve the lives of children and women in the following key areas: Child and maternal health, Nutrition, Education, Child Protection, Water, sanitation and hygiene, Social Policy and Advocacy, Adolescent empowerment and community resilience, and Humanitarian response.

How can you make a difference?

  • Conduct a quarterly assessment on implementation of the Cold Chain Rehabilitation Plan; Identify documents with local and international standards. carefully evaluated reference to existing standards and that the requirements of all relevant stakeholders are taken into consideration.
  • Support the delivery and installation of new cold chain equipment acquired with funding from Gavi (CDS3, CCEOP, RSS4), UNICEF, World Bank and CDC Africa as part of the implementation of the Rehabilitation Plan 2023-2027.
  • Support the expansion of the use of remote temperature monitoring devices to all health centres in the country and train staff in their use;
  • Support the biannual update of the national inventory of cold chain equipment;
  • Work with the national immunization supply chain Logistic Work Group (LWG) and identify public and private sector offices, organizations and expertise which have direct and indirect responsibilities; accountable for public sector property management and disposal of these cold chain equipment (CCE).
  • Liaise with the UNICEF Country Office Supply Unit on all health sector purchase and service requests.
  • Liaise with the Supply Unit to monitor purchase requests and deliveries of vaccines and cold chain equipment.
  • Ensure timely preparation and submission of vaccine and equipment arrival reports.
  • Ensure the establishment of a dashboard at central level to monitor supply chain performance indicators.
  • Support the implementation of the improved
  • Identify and review polices, guidelines and procedures related to public sector property management, cold chain, environment etc.
  • Explore sources and identify technology for decommissioning feasible for the locality- for national and further health administration levels.
  • Develop guideline/protocol – which provide an easily and accessible decommissioning methods/deposal method – economically and environmentally sound disposal mechanism, which could be adopted at all levels of the immunization supply chain levels.
  • A national consultation process may be required prior to adoption of a standards to ensure the disposal methods are responsive to the national and local contexts.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Advance University Degree in Biomedical, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering or other hazardous substance and environmental protection related sciences is required.

  • A Minimum of five years’ experience is required in managing cold chain and medical waste management /hazardous substance and chemical waste management/ at different level and knowledge of National Regulatory and Environmental Laws and Guidelines are required.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in French is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
