The Company

Arnhem Land Fire Abatement (ALFA) is an Aboriginal owned carbon business working in partnership with Traditional Landowners and Aboriginal ranger groups over more than 86,000 km2 of Arnhem Land. They are the registered project proponent for six projects which generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) through the Savanna Burning Methodology.

ALFA’s origin lies in the ground-breaking West Arnhem Land Fire Abatement (WALFA) project – the world’s first savanna burning abatement project. Their purpose is to support Traditional Owners and Aboriginal rangers to deliver best-practice fire management projects that generate environmental, cultural, and social benefits, producing Australian carbon credits (ACCUs) of the highest integrity.

The Role

ALFA is excitingly looking to evolve their business, which will require a talented and passionate Commercial Manager to both help ALFA deliver of in its strategic objectives but to also help realise the potential of nature based co – benefits.

Broadly, the role will support the objectives of:

  • Uplifting operational capability and resilience.
  • Ensuring the management of stakeholders is highly respectful and impactful.
  • Protecting and growing the market position.
  • Contributing knowledge and best practice thinking to maximise cultural and commercial outcomes for partners and the broader Indigenous communities in Arnhem Land.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Play a key role in the management of ALFA ACCU sales and commercial partnerships.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of information and data systems to support ALFA sales and commercial agreements.
  • Support ALFA and its project partners in Arnhem Land explore new nature-based market opportunities.
  • Support the ALFA Board and project partners in Arnhem Land to develop their capacity in relation to carbon markets and commercial operations.
  • Support ALFA in their external market and industry engagement.
  • Provide assistance to the ALFA Board and CEO as required.

Required Skills and Proficiencies

  • Demonstrated experience in carbon and/or other nature-based markets, including in-depth technical expertise in trading and business development related to carbon markets.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the environmental, social, and economic issues affecting remote First Nation communities in Australia.
  • Demonstrated strong financial and commercial acumen and experience in negotiating contracts.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and managing data systems to support planning, budgeting, monitoring, reporting and impact evaluation.
  • Relevant networks across government, industry, and community, as well as demonstrated high level experience in multi-stakeholder engagement.
  • Excellent communications skills including interpersonal, negotiation, conflict resolution, networking, and presentation skills.
