Job Description:

Purpose of position:

The Position of Communication Manager is key to the realization of World Vision Strategy OUR PROMISE and to the dissemination of WV Impact to key stakeholders by ensuring clear communication around OUR IMPACT OUR STORY. The position will play a critical role in ensuring World Vision work is known to the public as well as to its key supporters. The position holder will lead work in the following:

  • Provide leadership in communications by Conducting communications landscape assessment and strategic planning with key stakeholders
  • Ensure Communications leadership and coordination; Establish, resource and staff the communications unit to meet office needs
  • Monitor and manage reputation, risk, narrative and brand
  • Content creation and management; Internal communications to the partnership
  • Grant communication and VIP communications and engagement

Conduct communications landscape assessment and strategic planning with key stakeholders

  • Contribute to an external engagement strategy and/or build a communications strategy/ plans that reflect country strategy, fundraising, positioning and public engagement goals
  • Conduct a communications landscape to inform strategic decision making (including around risk and reputation)
  • Monitor, measure and report on the effectiveness of the communications / external engagement strategy
  • Work with key World Vision stakeholders to priorities and determine key audiences
  • Manage website of WV Niger and relationships between WV Niger and media and press

Communications leadership and coordination

  • Ensure that key internal communications messages and products of WV Niger are skillfully developed and articulated for meeting their objectives.
  • Coordinate and liaise with appropriate global and regional communications leaders to enable both global communications and positioning goals and support for WV Niger communications
  • Use or put in place mechanisms to enable coordination and decision making around communications
  • Put in place processes to deliver rapid sign offs of messaging and content

Establish, resource and staff the communications unit to meet the Country Office needs

  • Work with WV Niger leadership and P&C to put in place the communications staff/expertise and organizational structure required to deliver on communications and National Office goals.
  • Work with leadership and finance to secure and manage the communications budget required to staff, equip and support the unit so it can deliver on communications plans
  • Work with P&C to ensure communications handovers, transitions, and staff exit interviews and assessments are conducted
  • Ensure communications staff/consultants are properly equipped and have clear work plans and objectives, and are effectively line and performance managed to deliver quality work, while taking care to protect their mental and physical wellbeing.
  • Plan for communications transition / integration

Monitor and manage reputation, risk, narrative and brand

  • Establish systems and safeguards for the appropriate and effective flows of relevant information to and from WV Niger staff both internally and externally as/when required.
  • Monitor the internal, humanitarian, media and security landscape and works with and advises leadership, management and key functions on all areas of brand and reputation applying World Vision brand standards and complying with World Vision risk reporting protocols
  • Work with World Vision partner organisations to ensure proper branding and visibility in any collaborations
  • Support and ensure that all communications to various stakeholders, media and public are aligned to WVI quality and brand.

Content Production and Management

  • Enable the production of digital communications content (text, photographs, video) for funding (private, corporate and grant), positioning, advocacy and reporting purposes ensuring quality and brand alignment. Use WV systems for content delivery and coordination.
  • Liaise with and coordinate content stakeholders (WARO, SOs, Aps, response, technical, global) to manage, identify and prioritise content requirements to meet the highest value and broadest need
  • Identify and work with non-communications staff who can help provide content, when and where necessary
  • Work with Programs teams to identify opportunities for communications when conducting surveys, focus groups or field assessments
  • Ensure that WV Niger pages on www.wvi.org are up to date
  • Designate social media contributors and manage social media and online content and updates (i.e. via blogs, Youtube, Tweets, Facebook, etc)
  • Onboard/coordinate with/direct communications staff/consultants/teams to deliver content pieces and packages in line with briefs

Written content

  • Ensure content complies with child protection and informed consent protocols and treats subjects with dignity. Deliver content via World Vision content systems.
  • Write, edit, coordinate technical content to support and promote World Vision expertise / partnerships / innovation / learning / research / impact.
  • Support advocacy and campaign work with relevant content and messaging

Video / Photo content

  • Provide raw, semi-edited and finished individual and packages of video/photographic content in line with stakeholder needs and requests or briefing. Content required will include: children and communities in need; children and community beneficiaries in World Vision areas; leadership, operational or technical staff; expert, technical and response NGO/civil society and government partner organisations and staff;
  • Engage with World Vision stakeholders and commissioning parties to create/follow video/photo collection briefs delivering to deadline. Video/photo packages should be brand-aligned.
  • Ensure content complies with safeguarding, child protection and informed consent protocols and treats subjects with dignity.
  • Deliver content to agreed quality and file formats, with captions, translations, edits, as appropriate, via World Vision content systems.

Resource mobilization

  • Work collaboratively with the RAM unit to support programs and WV partnership in mobilizing human and financial resources for advocacy and campaign purposes
  • Assemble data for the purposes of resource acquisition, donor engagement
  • Provide technical expertise to facilitate resource mobilization as appropriate

Media engagement, management and coordination.

  • Work with SO and GC communications and other entities to build a media communications strategy/plan in line with WV Niger country strategy and OUR PROMISE
  • Enable media positioning efforts in order to highlight development and humanitarian needs (with a focus on children), issues, World Vision expertise, positions, reports, events, global and campaign moments and staff
  • Liaise with SO, GC and other WV entity communications to pursue, prioritize, coordinate, pitch, react to and manage media interviews, opportunities and content
  • Host and coordinate media trips to effectively position World Vision and its work, minimizing reputational damage through careful trip planning, coordination with media home country, expectation setting (in a TOR) and briefing.
  • Write press releases and ensure Q&As, key messages, facts, guidance and messaging are signed off and shared via WV digital asset systems
  • Identify, brief and train spokespeople to ensure professional on message media engagement that promotes World Visions operations, approach, expertise and humanitarian asks/positions
  • Promptly coordinate media interviews and schedules with spokespeople
  • Manage donors visits and partners in the field
  • Manage multiple requests for VIP trips through a prioritization and approval process
  • Coordinate with Security and Admin to brief VIPs on cultural and contextual issues, key messages and prepare VIPs to serve as spokespersons or ambassadors
  • Maximize media coverage of visit, where appropriate

Qualifications: Education/Knowledge/Technical Skills and Experience

  • Masters degree in communication, journalism, public policy, social sciences, or related field.
  • At least, five (5) years of relevant professional experience within the country
  • Experience of working with local, international and social media for campaigning and advocacy purposes
  • Management of organizational relations to with other organizations through networking and alliances.
  • Representational experience at national and international level; demonstrated skills to present in public
  • Strong competencies to plan, prioritize, and ability to deliver to tight deadlines and budgets
  • Excellent writing and editing skills fluent in English, and in French
  • Travel requirements this position entails a minimum of 40% travel both within and outside the NO
