Communication Officer

Under the direct supervision of the Communication Officer (NO2), you will work in partnership with the Marketing Services Unit, and in close collaboration with Communications, Programme, and PFP teams to design, implement, monitor, and evaluate communication plans. This includes developing media outreach strategies, content creation, and measuring the visibility and impact of UNICEF’s partnerships on behalf of children. The main functions/accountabilities are:

Communication for partnership strategy and materials:

  • Ensure that the production of communication for partnerships products and materials is timely executed and followed up.
  • Design and roll out joint communication plans (media, multimedia, digital, and web) to secure visibility of private partnerships.
  • Support the production of communication materials (e.g., briefing notes, images, video, web pages, etc.) as set out in the Communication Toolkit, with a special focus on private partnerships.
  • Draft and edit articles, press releases, human interest stories, and other advocacy/information materials for web-based and traditional media, presenting the impact of private partnerships on children.
  • Follow up on the production of partnerships and programme materials (e.g., films, videos, audiovisuals, etc.) and oversee the qualitative aspects of production (e.g., quality control, translations, reviews of layout and graphic design, etc.) to meet standards as set out in the Communication Toolkit.
  • Maintain an up-to-date documentation center for communication for partnership materials. Recommend appropriate information and communication materials for use in media, and other advocacy and communication for partnership activities.

Media relations:

  • Develop, draft and maintain contact information, materials and relationships with journalists and media outlets covering all media – print, TV, radio, web etc. – in the country, to communicate the story of UNICEF’s cooperation to a wider audience, with a special focus on corporate partnerships and on highlighting UNICEF’s results.
  • Develop and manage specific media engagement strategies to highlight UNICEF private sector partnerships, aligned with each company – including drafting press releases and coordinating media contacts with the support of the UNICEF external media agency.
  • In collaboration with UNICEF PR Agency, maintain and update media relations contact list/database focusing on business media outlets and journalists.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining close collaboration with mass media, as well as with groups and organizations whose support is essential to the achievement of advocacy and communication for partnerships objectives.
  • Assist in drafting and editing articles, press releases, human interest stories and other advocacy/information materials in all media formats, as appropriate.
  • Assist in collaborating with the media through activities such as organizing project site visits, facilitating photo coverage and TV footage and utilizing both web-based and traditional media as appropriate.
  • Monitor and evaluate the use and effectiveness of media materials. Maintain a library of coverage (clippings, coverage etc.)

Monitoring and evaluation:

  • Regular monitoring and evaluation activities are undertaken according to the work plan. Ensure results and reports are prepared and shared on a timely basis.
  • Monitor UNICEF’s presence in local, national, and international media, especially by focusing on UNICEF’s corporate partnership results.
  • Monitor the public perception and reputation of UNICEF’s corporate partners in the media and recommend appropriate communication actions.

Education

  • University degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field.

Experience

  • One year of practical professional work experience in communication, print and broadcast media, or interactive digital media.
  • Demonstrated strong writing and interpersonal communication skills. Experience working effectively with diverse groups of stakeholders, including from the private sector.
  • Experience of working with UNICEF or another United Nations agency or international non-governmental organization.
  • Experience working in developing contexts is an asset.

Language Requirements

  • Fluency in Portuguese and English is required. Knowledge of Spanish will be considered as an asset.
