Mission and objectives

The fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does — in programs, in advocacy and in operations. The equity strategy, emphasizing the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translates this commitment to children’s rights into action. For UNICEF, equity means that all children have an opportunity to survive, develop and reach their full potential, without discrimination, bias or favoritism. To the degree that any child has an unequal chance in life — in its social, political, economic, civic and cultural dimensions — her or his rights are violated. There is growing evidence that investing in the health, education and protection of a society’s most disadvantaged citizens — addressing inequity — not only will give all children the opportunity to fulfill their potential but also will lead to sustained growth and stability of countries. This is why the focus on equity is so vital. It accelerates progress towards realizing the human rights of all children, which is the universal mandate of UNICEF, as outlined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, while also supporting the equitable development of nations.

Context

UNICEF works towards realization of the rights of children as prescribed in the Convention of the Rights of the Children. These rights pertain to child survival, protection, development and participation. There is an ongoing requirement for production of communication, advocacy and visibility materials that document key children’s issues and ongoing responses in the field through high quality social media content to support UNICEF’s and the Government of India’s communication, advocacy and visibility efforts with legislatures, policy makers, media, donors, partners and the public at large.
Effective implementation of any major communication campaign requires a digital strategy and a comprehensive approach to digital engagement. Strategic digital content for all audiences and channels would be required as well as support on knowledge management.
To meet these requirements, UNICEF would like to engage the services of a digital and social media volunteer to support, expand and strengthen the social media activities on key child rights priority issues, with a focus on channel management, community engagement, creating social media content and campaigns and support knowledge management.
This UNV assignment is part of UNICEF’s Communication Advocacy and Partnerships programme. The Communication, Advocacy & Partnership is a Change Strategy for UNICEF India’s Country Programme (2023 – 2027) The CAP section at the UNICEF New Delhi Office aims to drive positive change for children in India and achieve strategic results for children with partners.
CAP section works collaboratively with all programme sectors and state offices of UNICEF, supporting communication requirements and furthering advocacy objectives – with an overarching focus on child rights, adolescent empowerment, social inclusion, gender and equity.
UNICEF India’s Communication Advocacy & Partnership (CAP) Section leads and supports UNICEF’s national and global advocacy priorities and campaigns that are convergent in nature such as Early Childhood Development (ECD), Adolescent Development and Engagement (ADE), global and India specific advocacy priorities (foundational learning, mental health and well-being, immunization, Child Rights, ending violence against women and children) as well as mainstreaming equity, gender-transformative approach and risk informed programming in terms of disaster risk resilience.
CAP’s work also focuses on enhancing visibility and awareness about UNICEF’s role, mandate and brand promotion, for UNICEF’s own flagship campaigns (viz. World Children’s Day, State of World Children’s report), as aligned to global/national advocacy and communication strategy.
India’s media industry has grown exponentially in terms of reach, influence and adoption of new technologies, opening new avenues for reaching out to wider audiences as well as segment specific audiences.
To support in strengthening and positioning UNICEF’s voice as leading advocate on issues concerning rights of children in India with aim of shifting advocacy narrative, focusing on policy, influencing positive behaviours:
