The Afghanistan Country Office is seeking an experienced Communication Officer (Multimedia) responsible for web stories, blog entries, photo essays, Facebook posts, Twitter campaigns, and videos for distribution via the UNICEF Afghanistan digital media platforms that are a part of our digital storytelling and use data to inform content and engagement choices.

Purpose for the job:

Web stories, blog entries, photo essays, Facebook posts, Twitter campaigns, and videos for distribution via the UNICEF Afghanistan digital media platforms all are a part of our digital storytelling.  By measuring and testing our efforts, we also use data to inform content and engagement choices.

Under the supervision and guidance of the Communication Specialist, the Communication Officer, Multimedia, will script, produce, shoot, and edit video and graphics for video productions intended for online and broadcast platforms in support of global communications strategy.

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:

Develops and coordinates the production of multimedia communication materials.

  • Implements the tasks in the country communication work plan and strategy as assigned.
  • Liaises with Programme Sections and gathers information to identify effective relevant country programme activities and results.
  • Coordinates with numerous people throughout ACO to personally research, structure, develop, assemble, and produce multimedia (text, images, audio, video, interactive, etc.) pieces for breaking news, scheduled events, and other content areas related to UNICEF programmes, and campaigns.
  • Develops and maintains key working relationships with media production companies and consultants, and with partner organizations to develop advocacy products.

Undertakes UNICEF video production and post-production.

  • Plans, scripts, shoots and edits video and web material in digital formats for web and broadcast distribution.
  • Films with professional video equipment or equivalent, and related audio accessories
  • Develops multimedia packages on a quick turnaround, under tight and variable deadlines for social media and other online and broadcast platforms.
  • Logs and digitizes source tapes, outputting final cuts to tape and web clips, audio editing and managing media for Adobe Creative Cloud, and related technologies.
  • Maintains branding for UNICEF videos and affiliated media products.
  • Edits videos for UNICEF priority communications.
  • Undertakes UNICEF video production including managing media for Premiere and related motion graphics and animation software.
  • Serves as ACO in-house videographer as required.
  • Conducts recorded interviews and manages audio files in a variety of formats.
  • Works with video files in multiple formats.
  • Provides oversight of post-production including motion graphics, animation and video editing, sound mix, subtitling and voice-overs.
  • Troubleshoots technical problems.

Maintains database and catalogue of multimedia materials and resources.

  • Creates, maintains, and updates the CO database and YouTube channel with video materials.
  • Share relevant materials with RO and DOC.
  • Upload materials to the global WeShare database. Creates and maintains a contact list/database of videographers in Afghanistan.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • University degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Advertising, Multimedia Production, Videography, Filmmaking, or a related field
  • A minimum of 2 (two) years of relevant practical professional experience in video and audio editing experience.
  • Knowledge and ability to film with professional video equipment using Canon EOS C100 Digital Video Camera or similar.
  • Knowledge and ability to edit videos in Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Knowledge of quality sound equipment for video production.
  • Knowledge of quality lighting for filming is an asset.
  • Experience with After FX and Pro Tools is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of YouTube and other social media sites is an asset.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
