UN Women has been working in Lebanon since 2015 through its triple mandate, encompassing normative support, UN system coordination and operational activities to mobilize urgent and sustained action to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls and support the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Operational activities have prioritized advancing women’s leadership and political participation, women and peace and security, and economic empowerment with changing discriminatory gender norms as a cross-cutting area of work.
Under the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) programme, UN Women plays a key role in providing technical assistance to the UN system, government entities, and women’s organizations to advance peacebuilding efforts in Lebanon. UN Women’s catalytic support to various stakeholders amplifies women’s agency and meaningful participation in conflict prevention and peacebuilding and is situated within the overall strategies and approaches of the UN system in Lebanon and the Women Peace and Security agenda.
UN Women’s WPS portfolio in Lebanon includes: a) advancing the implementation of the UNSCR1325 National Action Plan on WPS with NCLW and other government entities including military and security agencies; b) supporting women peacebuilders to prevent and manage conflict, and promote reconciliation at community level; c) coordinating the work of the Women’s Peacebuilding Network in Lebanon (WPNL) as a space for strengthening women’s voices and capacity in peacebuilding; and d) producing knowledge products, research, and policy papers on gender responsive peacebuilding.
Under the overall guidance of the UN Women Representative and the direct supervision of the WPS Programme management specialist, UN Women seeks to recruit a Communication Specialist to ensure stronger visibility of UN Women’s WPS work; better documentation of programme results; and a sound acknowledgement of donors’ contribution.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide substantive support to the planning and design of external communication and outreach/advocacy strategies and plans for the WPS portfolio
- Provide analysis for elaboration of communication strategies; ensure gender perspective
- Review communication, advocacy and outreach strategies integrated into proposals for project/programmes and
- other initiatives, as necessary;
- Monitor and analyze print and social media and provide analysis;
Coordinate and contribute substantively to the development and dissemination of advocacy materials about the WPS portfolio
- Develop and produce communication and advocacy instruments and materials, including briefings, social media posts/visuals, impact stories, press releases, etc. and coordinate their dissemination through effective channels;
- Identify storylines for publication and articles featuring the work of WPS programme in coordination with project managers and implementing partners;
- Review and approve communications materials, produced by implementing partners and disseminate through UN Women platforms.
- Coordinate the translation/adaption/rewriting of information received, printing and dissemination of publications and multimedia materials
- Produce high-resolution photography and videography portraying women peacebuilders in their work, in line with corporate guidelines.
- Design and coordinate implementation of social media campaign(s) to promote women’s peace work on key national and international dates.
- Conduct field visits to implementation sites to collect data and/or stories for communications.
Coordinate the WPNL web/ online presence
- Coordinate WPNL website content and maintenance based on corporate requirements;
- Coordinate WPNL social media accounts in line with corporate social media policy;
- Upload information to knowledge management system on a regular basis, including news, updates, resources.
- Create a repository to compile documents and visuals on women and peace and make it available to the public through campaigning and social media boosting.
- Develop and Implement a Communications Action Plan for the Women’s Peacebuilding Network in Lebanon (WPNL)
Required Skills and Experience
Education and Certification:
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in communications, public relations, journalism or relevant field is required.
- A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience:
- At least 2 years of professional work experience at national or international level in public relations, communications or advocacy is required.
- Experience in web-based management systems and the use of social media is required.
- Experience in production and graphic design is an asset
Languages:
- Fluency in English and Arabic is required.
