Departmental Structure:

This position is an important part of the Communications team. This role collaborates dynamically together with the Fundraising team as together they strategies and plan for comms with deep impact. This role supervises the Communications team, this includes a Digital Specialist, contractors as needed and volunteers.

Primary Purpose:

To lead NJP communications, across all channels. You will create new opportunities, while managing our existing highly valued networks, build the National Justice Project’s profile and visibility.

This role is responsible for delivering the National Justice Project’s media, branding, communications, advocacy and content production activities and projects.

This position is responsible for engaging with and strengthening our community of supporters to increase our profile and secure greater impact in our work.

This is a role with real variety and impact across the organisation. You will have a direct influence on strategy and being involved with the delivery across a variety of areas. It is a role that will make a positive different to the lives of our clients and their communities

KEY RESULT AREAS:

GROWTH: grow NJP audiences [lead generation] across social media, mailing list (MailChimp), petitions, and donor platforms

AWARENESS: grow brand awareness through NJP media mentions and audience reach

ENGAGEMENT: maintain and heighten subscriber journeys, engagement rates across social media, EDMs, and events

CONVERSION: convert audiences into donors, activists (through our projects and partnerships), event participants, and client campaign supporters (through petitions and other campaign techniques)

TIMELINES: ensure that proactive and reactive NJP communications are delivered in a timely way noting that our legal practice requires some communications to be written and distributed at short notice.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Core Responsibilities:

  • Communications Policies: act as the custodian of NJP’s Communications Policy, ensuring communications are produced in accordance with staff permissions, approval procedures, and messaging guidelines
  • Media Engagement: engage media on NJP’s work, clients, and impact; provide media advice to NJP staff and clients; maintain and develop relationships with key media professionals; monitor for media reporting.
  • Project Communications: support the Projects and Partnerships team with marketing and communications expertise to ensure flagship projects (CopWatch; Call It Out, T4J), reach target communities and convert audiences to act.
  • Website Management: Maintain the NJP website and act as guardian of website integrity/structure, categorisation, and content guidelines; produce content for website news/blog; undertake SEO optimisation.
  • Data: Implement data-driven automated communications journeys and content, including supporter onboarding, nurturing surveying and reengagement.
  • Marketing Strategy: contribute to and implement NJP’s marketing strategy, including producing our Impact Report and suite of marketing publications.
  • Brand Management: Act as the brand custodians to ensure consistency of the NJP brand identity and sub-brands (Call It Out,; Cop Watch; Hear me Out)
  • Audience Engagement: deepen audience brand awareness and identification; inform supporters about NJP’s work, issues, and impact.
  • Content Production: oversee the development of brand content (including copywriting, annual/impact reports, video production and graphic design) across communication channels, including website, and EDM (Mailchimp).
  • Events: deliver online supporter engagement events; assist in delivering flagship events (LawHack) and deliver effective communications around all NJP stakeholder events.
  • Content Library: maintain a central and updated library of content, including photography, publication design files (InDesign), and brand toolkits & templates (Canva).

Operational Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Communications Team to support NJP’s overall vision, strategy, budget and operational priorities, while fostering our values and a positive culture.
  • Assist development of, and successfully implement an annual communications strategic plan and budget and deliver to a timeline, whilst maintaining NJP’s position as a strategic litigation law firm.
  • Report on all Communications outcomes and activities to the CEO & COO, the NJP Board & Committees.

General Responsibilities:

  • Learn and maintain NJP’s culture and brand
  • Achieve appropriate KPIs
  • Ensure NJP’s adheres to relevant privacy and associated legislation and NJP policies
  • Recruit and manage volunteers as required
  • Update and Implement policies, processes and procedures for the department
  • Ensure the database is structured to meet NJP needs and ensure data privacy/security

Lead NJP’s communications in a flexible manner as required by senior management and as communications platforms and mechanisms change with community demand and as NJP’s work and focus changes

JOB SPECIFIC SKILLS:

  • High level writing and editing skills
  • Content production skills: copy, video, graphics, photography
  • Strong understanding of political/advocacy communication
  • Strategic and critical thinking
  • Excellent skills in interpersonal communication and stakeholder management: communicates with influence, confidence and cultural respect
  • Knowledge of media, political and civil society landscape
  • Strong organisational skills: Ability to manage a broad range of projects and activities with limited resources and to tight deadlines
  • Strong event management skills

YOU WILL BE SOMEONE WHO HAS:

  • Tertiary qualification in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or Business
  • Minimum three years’ experience in working in a communications role working on proactive and reactive media scenarios
  • Cultural sensitivity and commitment to supporting social justice and human rights
  • Exceptional relationship management, enjoys working with people from a range of diverse backgrounds/ professions
  • Solution orientated: proactive and resourceful approach with ‘can do’ attitude
  • Evaluates and improves: open to continuous improvement, innovates and able to see and action growth opportunities
  • Comfortable in working with a high level of autonomy while also in a small team that has broad responsibilities
  • Commitment to both efficiency and quality outcomes
