Job Description
Internship Overview: Development (fundraising, donor relations, and proposal development) and communications are highly valued skillsets that employers seek in job candidates; these functions are critical to the success of a nonprofit organization, and cultivating experience in this area will allow you to gain insight into various subject/technical areas, learn development strategy, and be marketable across sectors. The Communications and Development Intern will work closely with the Development Coordinator and IRC staff to engage potential donors around the IRC in Denver’s mission through content and program material creation, proposal writing and research, storytelling and communications planning.
LOCATION: Fully remote
COMMITMENT: 10 hours per week June 3 – August 23, 2024
SCHEDULE: Regular weekly schedule during business hours 9 am – 5 pm and some evenings if desired
DUTIES:
- Interview clients, staff members, community stakeholders and partners, and generate content for stories, reports, and newsletters
- Create external content to engage supporters
- Assist with planning special events as needed
- Support the communications and donor relations strategy
- Support the creation of an end-of-year fundraising strategy and campaign and assist with event marketing
- Research funders and strategize funder engagement
- Research funding opportunities that align with the IRC in Denver’s Strategic Action Plan
- Work with the Development Coordinator to strengthen proposal development systems and processes
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: The Communications and Development Intern will gain insight into the grant writing and reporting process for a nonprofit organization. They will gain experience creating an executing a communications plan and will have the opportunity to write content for fundraising appeals, donor-facing reports, newsletters and social media.

This is an unpaid internship position. No financial compensation, including compensation for relocation, is available.
Qualifications
Required Skills & Competencies:
- Experience or strong interest in journalism, communications, and marketing
- Experience or interest in event planning, development, and community outreach
- Experience or interest in graphic design and visual storytelling
- Excellent written communication skills
- Self-starter who is able to take initiative on individual projects
- Possess strong organizational/multi-tasking skills, attention to detail and have an ability to meet deadlines on time
- Possess ability to work well independently and in cooperative decision-making settings
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office including Outlook and Excel
- Comfortable working in a multi-cultural environment; international experience and knowledge of refugee issues a plus.
