Organizational Background

Gargaar Relief and Development Organization (GREDO) is a local non-profit, non-governmental humanitarian and development organization with its headquarter in Baidoa and has sub-offices across southern states in Somalia initiated in December 1992 by a group of Somali intellectuals and well-wishers responding to a need. GREDO focuses on aspects of emergency, humanitarian responses, and development/resilience programs. GREDO’s programmatic thematic areas include Education, Health, Nutrition, WASH, Livelihoods, Resilience, Environmental management, and governance with a focus on human rights, access to justice, women empowerment, and protection of the vulnerable communities and individuals especially IDPs, refugees, and returnees. GREDO has been able to nurture and grow strong and vibrant partnerships and collaboration with a range of stakeholders including the regional states and the Federal. GREDO is dedicated to promoting the rights and status of marginalized groups enabling them to seek and secure sustainable livelihoods to create a society that has equitable access to all opportunities. The organization maintains excellent relations with all international and civil society organizations within the country in the aspects of relief, rehabilitation, development, peace building, and human rights.

Job Summary:

The Communications Assistant will support the Communications Officer in implementing GREDO’s communication and advocacy strategy. This role will assist with a variety of communications tasks, including content creation, media relations, digital media management, and administrative support. The Communications Assistant will work closely with the Communications team as well as other departments to help raise the visibility and profile of GREDO’s programs and activities.

Responsibilities:

  1. Support the development and implementation of communication materials such as social media content, blog posts, newsletters, press releases, and presentations.
  2. Assist with managing GREDO’s digital presence, including updating website content, monitoring social media analytics, and coordinating digital asset management.
  3. Help organize and coordinate media relations activities, including compiling media contact lists, pitching story ideas, and supporting press events.
  4. Provide administrative support for the Communications team, such as scheduling meetings, taking notes, and preparing reports.
  5. Collaborate with program teams to gather and document success stories, beneficiary testimonials, and other content for communications purposes.
  6. Support the Communications Intern in their tasks and help mentor them on communication best practices.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned by the senior team.
  8. Comply with GREDO policies and practice with respect to child protection, code of conduct, health and safety, equal opportunities and other relevant policies and procedures.
  9. Liaise with vendors to ensure GREDO with the donors and partners branding requirements are met and the execution of items meet the standards.
  10. Collecting case studies that show the impact and success of our work and projects. This includes interviewing beneficiaries of our work and writing impact stories.
  11. Producing high quality photo and video assets and being able to package these for various audiences.
  12. Support implementation of social media strategy and content calendar across our digital platforms including updating the country website.

Qualifications and Skills:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related/equivalent field.
  2. 2-3 years of experience in a communications or public relations role, preferably in the non-profit/development sector.
  3. Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to tailor content for different audiences
  4. Proficient in using social media platforms, content management systems, and digital media tools.
  5. Proficiency in graphic design and multimedia content creation, particularly using adobe creative cloud.
  6. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
  8. Commitment to GREDO’s mission and values.
  9. Skills in photography and videography both shooting and editing.
  10. Excellent writing skills.
  11. High level of professionalism and ability to work under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines in complex and vast changing environment.
  12. Demonstrated gender awareness and gender sensitivity.
  13. Professional in English both written and spoken.
