Job Purpose
Reporting to the Communications Manager, this post will support the communications and audience development activities of The Hunterian, including supporting events, social media, press and marketing. They will help to ensure internal and external communications are delivered effectively with consistent messages aligned with The Hunterian’s strategic plan to our diverse audiences using the full range of media.
The post will be pivotal in helping to co-ordinate and promote engagement programmes and content for a diverse range of audiences. This post requires someone who is highly organised, audience-focused, with excellent communication skills which enable them to develop successful and sustainable partnerships and collaborations.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Support engagement with digital and physical communities and audiences via a range of marketing and digital communications and through embedding inclusive practice in support of the Hunterian strategic priority to be ‘a more meaningful place for more diverse audiences.
2. Monitor and input into all Hunterian social media channels, creating content on specific campaigns, scheduling, updating information and responding to followers.
3. Where required, support students, placements or volunteers on the creation of social media content.
4. Supporting the Communications Manager in managing filming requests, licencing and copyright and overseeing the central marketing image resource.
5. Managing and updating private view and press lists, supervising filming and media events and drafting press briefings and releases. Manage the Hunterian coverage book.
6. Writing and updating content for the Hunterian website and monitoring profile on external sites.
7. Collating audience data and support the analysis and reporting of data, research and evaluation on audiences, events, the website and social media to inform decision making and reporting.
8. Supporting the team in developing and maintaining resources for use in the venues, including schools, family and accessibility resources and digital tools, working closely with the Visitor Experience team.
9. Responsible for co-ordinating the family offer for The Hunterian venues, including in venue resources, events and communications.
10. Supporting the Audience Experience and Engagement team in planning and delivering specified events programmes and in-gallery resources. This might include co-ordinating activities, group visits, resources, staffing and all event promotion and communications e.g. press releases and social media posts.
11. Supporting the creation and maintenance of digital engagement tools including the blog, podcasts and visitor apps as required.
12. Planning and writing newsletters for various audiences including staff, the public and students,
13. Providing support for event planning including room or catering bookings, ordering materials, monitoring resources and updating planning tools such as the Events diary / spreadsheets.
Knowledge, qualifications, skills and experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1 Either Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with the level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or role. Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 7 (Advanced Higher / Scottish Vocational Qualification level 3, Higher National Certificate) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.
A2 Knowledge of social media platforms and social media content creation.
A3 Knowledge of event management and planning processes.
A4 Understanding of relevant health and safety policies and procedures relevant to the role.
A5: Knowledge of current best practice in addressing racial, social and cultural equalities, diversity and inclusion issues within a social, cultural or heritage environment.
Desirable:
B1 Direct personal or lived experience of barriers to participation, including with widening participation experience, facing barriers to employment, people living with a disability, people from a BAME background and those who identify as LGBTQ+.
B2 Understanding of audience development in a cultural context.
B3 Knowledge of copyright and licensing.
Skills
Essential:
C1 Excellent interpersonal written and communication skills with a focus on written communications.
C2 Excellent office IT skills, including. databases, Excel, MS Teams and other Office tools.
C3 Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage a range of activities, meet deadlines and prioritise appropriately.
C4 Competent at working with data and analysing audience statistics.
C5 Ability to work efficiently under pressure with excellent attention to detail.
C6 Ability to demonstrate initiative, and exercise judgement to resolve problems independently.
C7 Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Desirable:
D1 Advanced social media skills, including podcast editing, video creation, image editing and copywriting.
Experience
Essential:
E1 Experience delivering customer-focussed programmes and activities.
E2 Experience of event management in a complex organisation, including working with budgets, timelines and purchasing.
E3 Understanding of relevant health and safety policies and procedures relative to the role.
E4 Practical experience of working in a customer facing environment.
E5 Experience of designing and producing visual digital content, e.g. social media in a professional context.
E6 Experience engaging suppliers and external partners.
Desirable:
F1 Experience of working in cultural or heritage environments with diverse and under-represented communities.
F2 Experience of T4 or similar web content management system.
F3 Experience of writing press releases and liaising with press.
F4 Experience of working with collections in a museum environment.
F5 Supporting or supervising other staff or volunteers.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 5, £25,138 – £29,605 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours p/w) and open-ended.
