Communications Coordinator (Bangladesh)

LAW has an exciting position for an experienced and skilled Communications Coordinator to join us. The selected candidate will report directly to LAW’s Programme Manager in Bangladesh, and work in close collaboration with the Communications Manager based in Geneva. They will promote LAW’s work in the Bangladesh and the sub region, and increase visibility, profile key events and advocacy activities.

LAW is an independent, non-profit organisation comprised of human rights lawyers and jurists working in fragile and conflict affected areas in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. We focus on gender equality and sexual and gender-based violence, rule of law and accountability, transformative justice and natural resource exploitation, working to bring justice to those who need it most.

LAW’s Rohingya Crisis Programme

LAW’s ground-breaking Rohingya Crisis programme seeks to ensure meaningful Rohingya participation in the ongoing international justice processes seeking accountability for their persecution in Myanmar, including engagement with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (The Gambia v. Myanmar); the ongoing investigation by the Officer of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the work of the Independent Investigative Mechanism on Myanmar (IIMM). Additionally, LAW undertakes innovative strategic litigation on behalf of more than 500 Rohingya clients and ensures Rohingya voices are prioritised throughout its advocacy.

A key aspect of the programme is LAW’s network of over 70 Rohingya Survivor Advocates, who are given ongoing training to provide legal information to the survivors of sexual and gender-based violence about international justice mechanisms related to the Rohingya Crisis and provide them support in accessing services. In addition to empowering Rohingya women and girls, LAW works closely with male and Hijra (third gender, transgender, intersex) survivors of sexual and gender-based violence to ensure their access to justice.

We are looking for an experienced, and enthusiastic Communications Coordinator to help expand our communications reach and impact, in particular through social media engagement and traditional media activities that will showcase and amplify our work, as well as to reach our clients, their communities and the broader public to advocate on behalf of individuals and communities who have suffered human rights violations and abuses.

More about the Position

Where? The position will be based at LAW’s Bangladesh Office in Cox’s Bazar.

Duration: 12 Months on a full-time basis with possibility of extension subject to funding.

Salary: Competitive rates of pay apply.

Role Overview and Responsibility:

The Communications Coordinator will support the Programme Manager and the Team to promote LAW’s work, increasing visibility, profile key events and advocacy activities in country and globally. The post holder will perform duties in accordance with the responsibilities outlined below:

Communications

  • Develop activity calendar for the projects covering plans for social media; website, press, events, awards and external communication;
  • Design and develop posters, logos, infographics, videos, and other fact sheets and tool kits as per the programme requirement;
  • Monitor, track indicators and evaluate media coverage; campaigns, publication prints and digital to maximise efficiency;
  • Support preparation of key messaging, LAW’s research reports and legal filings and concept notes for events.
  • Provide biweekly reports of deliverables detailing progress against workplan
  • Conduct field visits and take professional photos for championing and profiling successful stories and social media posts;
  • Any other task requested from the Programme manager and the Communications Manager.
  • Draft press releases articulating project impact and achievements effectively;
  • Support relationships and maintain list of national and regional network and journalistic contacts;

Social Media and Digital

  • Develop a social media plan and identify various audiences for our social media channels, and plan how to increase LAW’s engagement in country.
  • Design and implement a social media schedule, ensuring content is planned well in advance for key activities, and proactively respond to breaking news;
  • Design, deliver and maintain engaging content across our key social media channels, including ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter), to create impactful stories, case studies, and other content to engage with our audiences.
  • Assist in the creation, designing of innovative, information toolkits (audio, digital) that will be used by Survivor Advocates for their field work
  • Maintain and update the website content, collating inputs from the county programme;
  • Research and analyse performance on the various platforms and make recommendations on how to improve our communications.

Experience, Skills and Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, media relations, journalism or related field;
  • Right to work in Bangladesh.
  • Excellent written and oral skills in English and Bengali required; with the ability to clearly articulate information to various audiences and stakeholders
  • Minimum 4 years demonstrated experience working in journalism, media relations, advocacy or communications in a similar role;
  • Minimum 4 years proven experience of media and social media content development and dissemination;
  • Relevant experience working with international NGOs is preferred, ideally in human rights or humanitarian field;
  • Track record of content production and social media management;
  • Excellent knowledge of multimedia production and editing;
  • Demonstrated experience designing graphics, multimedia content and design software;
  • Ability to work on own initiative and part of the wider team;
  • Experience in photography; ideally with DSLR cameras or similar (desirable)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and strong technical literacy;
