Reporting structure
Communications Coordinator will report to Programme Manager (PM)
Responsibilities:
Content Development
•Working closely with the Programme Manager, identify and collect communications content such as photographs, short videos, interviews with staff and beneficiaries, for use in donor communications, on social media, and through other channels.
•Manage the process of “story idea” submissions, ensuring frequent input from field teams.
•Identify possible stories for case studies to be approved by the PM, conduct interviews with beneficiaries and MAG staff, write and design case studies for submission to donors.
•As directed by the PM the development of communications products such as (but not limited to) case studies, case studies, PowerPoint Presentations, brochures, etc.
•Manage the MAG Iraq Facebook and Instagram pages (including posts in Kurdish and Arabic) and support the Manchester HQ social media team through the provision of social media content.
•Support and coordinate with the DEORE officer to publicise DEORE material on MAG’s social media channels and to identify and capture engagement data related to DEORE content on social media
•Appropriately forward and/or respond to comments and messages received on the MAG Iraq Facebook page, maintain list of standard responses.
•Act as the liaison with consultants/professional photographers/videographers to gather and produce content.
Media Relations
•Maintain list of media contacts; monitor national and international media for mentions of MAG.
•Work with senior MAG colleagues (primarily the CD and PM) to respond to requests for interviews or visits to operational sites by media, liaise with staff to arrange and prepare for interviews.
•Develop materials for use with media and other external engagement, including occasionally preparing press releases.
Events/Donor Relations
•As required, support or lead external events to raise awareness of MAG’s work with donors, government and the general public.
•Suggest ideas for and implement plans for the annual mine action awareness day on 4th April.
•Manage stock of visibility items, design and order visibility items such as banners, posters, stickers, and other items; ensure compliance with donor visibility requirements.
•Support donor visits to operational sites.
Other duties as assigned
•Translate material from English to Kurdish and/or Arabic.
•Act as key liaison with communications staff at MAG’s Manchester headquarters.
•Act as an ambassador for MAG, promoting its ethos and mission statement.
•Ensure soft file organisation and secure storage of images, captions, logos, media appearances, communications documents, photo consent forms.
•Travel to MAG’s operational bases on a regular basis to collect content, abide by MAG’s policies and procedures for visits to hazardous areas.
Qualifications & Preferred Skills
Selection Criteria:
Essential skills and experience
•Advanced written and spoken English Language
•Knowledge of multiple languages used in Iraq, including ability to write in both Arabic and Kurdish (multiple dialects preferred).
•Experience working for a humanitarian / development NGO
•at least 3-5 years of experience that includes: external communications, liaison and representation with various stakeholders, managing social media accounts, writing content for donor communications (e.g. donor reports, case studies for donors), event planning, measuring the impact of NGO activities, and/or humanitarian mine action.
•Good photography skills (it is not necessary to be a professional photographer, but you should be able to capture quality images for social media, and be able to use a DSLR camera)
•Experience with InDesign, Photoshop, and/or Canva or similar applications
•Experience developing communications products, such as reports, briefings, photos captions, case studies, and social media content
Essential Aptitude
•Strong “soft-skills”: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work closely with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, and work with communities where MAG works with an empathetic and understanding manner.
•Ability to represent MAG externally (with media, donors, others) in a professional manner.
•Highly motivated, creative, proactive and willing to take initiative to identify new communications-related projects and products
•Attention to detail and commitment to high quality standards
•Willingness to travel regularly (between 1-3 times per quarter) to operational bases, including overnight stays at MAG’s secure bases.
•Ability to establish effective working relationships at all levels internally and externally
•Ability to meet deadlines and work calmly under pressure
•Reliability and punctuality.
Desirable skills and experience
•Knowledge of the humanitarian mine action sector and safe behaviours that communities affected by explosive ordnance need to adopt in order to stay safe.
•Ability to translate between English and Kurdish (especially multiple dialects of Kurdish) AND Arabic
•Good numeracy skills including the ability to perform basic data analysis in Excel and comfort with databases
•Experience engaging donors, the media, public, and/or government officials
•Understanding of the humanitarian / development context in Iraq
