Communications Manager – The Natural History Consortium

Reporting to: Head of Programmes

Location: Jubilee House, Wapping Road, Bristol, BS1 4RW

Responsible for: Freelance staff, contract staff, volunteers

Salary and hours: £30,000 per annum, non-negotiable. Full-time 37.5 hours / week. We would also consider a part-time role for the right candidate on a pro-rata basis.

Introduction

We are recruiting a Communications Manager role within our core team at the Natural History Consortium.

We’re a small friendly team, working at pace, looking for an experienced individual to manage our internal and external communications. The role will include managing our social media platforms, marketing public and professional events, and activating communications through our 14 partners.

We’d love to hear from you if you’re highly organised, creative, with experience in communications and marketing and an understanding of working in a small busy organisation where everyone mucks in.

About The Natural History Consortium

The Natural History Consortium (NHC) is a charitable
collaboration of 14 research, media, policy, and conservation organisations working together on
a shared mission: engaging people with the natural world through collaborative action.

Together our objective is to advance the public understanding of wildlife and the natural
environment and their conservation. We achieve this by:

  • Delivering entertaining and informative events and activities that inspire greater public
    interest, volunteering and action for nature
  • Facilitating, developing, and disseminating novel communication techniques that engage the
    widest possible audience
  • Building, supporting and piloting effective partnerships that bring together diverse
    organisations that face similar challenges and issues, and help organisations learn from each
    other

Our staff team exists to leverage the resource of the 14 partners who have extensive skills,
experience and knowledge and meet regularly to input into NHC programmes.

Our annual programmes include City Nature Challenge, the Festival of Nature, and Communicate. In addition, we work on several one-off collaborative projects and programmes each year.

Working at The Natural History Consortium

This is a full-time role (37.5 hours/week) based at our office in Bristol City Centre (we will
consider part-time applications on a pro-rata basis). The majority of hours will be worked
Monday – Friday, between our core hours of 8am – 6pm. The team typically work remotely on a
Friday, we offer flexibility to work remotely on occasion on an ad hoc basis (during non-event
delivery periods).

Some weekend and evening work will be expected during event delivery, particularly during the
Festival of Nature (6-15th June 2025). Time off in lieu will be given.


The Purpose of the Role

This role contributes to our aim of engaging people with the natural world through collaborative action through managing our internal and external communications.

The expected outcomes for the role are:

  • Creating and delivering Natural History Consortium (NHC) Communications Strategies and Plans.
  • Activating and supporting communications across our 14 NHC partners, building positive relationships with Marketing and Communications Leads at each organisation.
  • Managing our social media channels and newsletters, including creating content and monitoring engagement for our @FestOfNature, @Nat_His_Con and @BioBlitzUK channels.
  • Marketing our programme of events aimed at public audiences including Festival of Nature, which reaches an audience of 30,000 people each year.
  • Marketing our programme of professional facing events, including Communicate conference. Curated by our NHC partners, Communicate currently takes place in person in Bristol,
    London, and Manchester, and online.
  • Managing marketing budgets and contributing to fundraising.
  • Contributing to the successful operations and administrations of the charity.

Key event dates

Due to the nature of the role, we will need you to be available over the following key event
dates:

  • City Nature Challenge: Fri 25th – Mon 28th April 2025
  • Festival of Nature: Fri 6th – Sun 15th June 2025 (plus pack down on 16th June)
  • Communicate: November 2025 dates TBC

First interviews will be held on Zoom (online) and will take place on Monday 4th, Tuesday 5th,
and Wednesday 6th November.

Second interviews will take place on Tuesday 12th November in person at our office in Bristol
City Centre.
