Job Summary:
The Communications Manager will support Whatcom Land Trust by creating engaging written and visual content for general communications, outreach and fundraising campaigns. Under the guidance of the Communications Director, the Manager will run and create content for all Land Trust communications channels including but not limited to website, e-blasts, social media channels, digital and printed newsletters, and the annual impact report.
Duties and Responsibilities: While this position description does not contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee, those that are most common presently are listed below. These may change or new ones may be assigned at any time with or without notice:
- Create engaging content for communications tools aligned with the organization’s voice and messaging guidelines
- Write high-quality, engaging stories about Land Trust projects, donors, volunteers and community partners grounded in the best-available science
- Construct creative multi-media collateral to support campaigns, such as videos and podcasts o Design engaging and relevant social media content for Whatcom Land Trust’s digital channels, supporting fundraising or other campaigns as needed P age 1 tendersglobal.net 2
- Create e-mail communications through Mailchimp to support fundraising and outreach campaigns, including the monthly e-newsletter “The Steward”.
- Manage Whatcom Land Trust communications platforms
- Perform basic WordPress website updates including event listings, article posts and page updates
- Manage messaging and interactions on social media channels
- In collaboration with the philanthropy team, manage constituent integration between Whatcom Land Trust’s Little Green Light database and communications platforms such as Mailchimp
- Support earned media and press relationships as needed
- Under the guidance of the Communications Director, support creation and distribution of press releases and advisories
- Submit pitches and coordinate communications with press related to earned media
- Design high quality printed collateral aligned with the organization’s brand guidelines
- Create printed collateral using Adobe InDesign and Canva, including magazine-style newsletters, annual impact reports, special event materials, fundraising letters and outreach pamphlet
- Provide administrative and project support
- Coordinate the Board Advisory Committee including scheduling, notetaking, and running virtual/hybrid meetings
- Manage organization of photography and videography assets, coordinating with staff, volunteers and consultants as needed
- Maintain an archive of Whatcom Land Trust communications materials and press coverage
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required skills and abilities:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in Canva and Adobe Suite, particularly InDesign, for graphic design and other creative tasks
- Ability to create engaging content for various platforms, including social media, newsletters, and press releases
- Ability to understand branding guidelines and maintain brand consistency
- Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively
- Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy and integrity in all communications
- Flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities and needs within a nonprofit environment
