Communications & Marketing Officer

About Climate Stewards

Climate Stewards is a Christian NGO which encourages people and organisations to be good stewards of the environment by reducing their carbon emissions whenever possible, and to offset the remainder by supporting our community-based carbon mitigation projects in the Global South. We also advocate for climate justice, and provide tools, resources and advice to increase carbon literacy.

The past year has seen significant growth in demand for our advice, support, resources and online tools – all aimed at helping churches, mission agencies, NGOs, small businesses and individuals to measure, reduce and offset their carbon footprints. We are now seeking to recruit a talented, enthusiastic and creative person to join our small, friendly team and lead on communicating with our partners, developing the Climate Stewards brand and promoting our work to a wider audience.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will be adept at juggling planned and reactive work, motivated to work on their own and, after training and settling into the role, to be able to act as a voice and face of Climate Stewards when communicating with supporters, partners, clients and potential clients.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • at least 2 years’ experience in communications and marketing, able to show us examples of high-quality communications and campaigns you have delivered
  • a range of marketing and communication skills including preparing materials for print, digital and social content, and working with other stakeholders to meet deadlines
  • excellent IT skills – you will be managing content on our website (currently using WordPress with Elementor) as well as preparing social media campaigns and newsletters (using Meta Business Suite and Mailchimp)
  • a good creative eye for design and strong graphic design skills (we use Affinity Publisher and Canva)
  • ability to write in clear, fluent and concise English, including text for our website, annual reports, client presentations, social media posts and other documents
  • the ability to tell stories in a sensitive, powerful and audience-appropriate way
  • experience of analysing data and insight from social media and other sources to evaluate success and steer future practice
  • an understanding of the cultural context of our project partners and how to communicate this appropriately
  • confidence and flexibility to manage projects independently, in collaboration with the CS team
  • a willingness to represent Climate Stewards at occasional training courses, workshops, seminars, conferences, church services and events online or in person across the UK
  • ability to react quickly and sensitively to emerging news stories and social media trends

You will need to be a practising Christian, comfortable with leading and taking part in regular corporate prayer with colleagues, and representing Climate Stewards to Christian agencies and churches of all denominations.

In addition, we’d love it if you can offer one or more of the following

  • knowledge and passion on issues relating to climate change, climate justice, carbon offsetting and creation care
  • experience of working for an environmental NGO
  • a degree-level qualification in a relevant field
  • experience in identifying, developing and managing new business opportunities
  • designing and optimising websites

The Role

It’s an exciting time to join Climate Stewards as we seek to build on our strong reputation and establish Climate Stewards as the go-to organisation for anyone who is serious about tackling climate change. We have a newish website and growing mailing list and social media presence and are well known in the UK Christian world. In 2024 we want to step up a level and get many more people, churches and other organisations engaged and passionate about tackling climate change.

In the coming year, the Comms and Marketing Officer will

  • communicate with existing partners and supporters about our work through our annual report, quarterly newsletters, monthly blogs and bi-weekly social media, as well as specific campaigns e.g. advent, lent
  • highlight the urgency and severity of the climate crisis and promote ways to reduce and mitigate our carbon footprint
  • raise the voices and concerns of our beneficiaries through storytelling
  • get more people using our online tools (footprintr.me and 360carbon.org)
  • generate more sales for our carbon footprint audit service
  • collaborate with CS partners in the Netherlands and USA, A Rocha and other strategic partners including EcoChurch and EcoSynagogue on campaigns and marketing
  • work towards the launch of an Ambassador programme, providing resources and advice to a new network of volunteer local speakers for CS

  • Salary £29,750 pro rata (based on a 37.5-hour week)
