Communications Senior Assistant
The Global Green Growth Institute’s (GGGI) presence in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) has undergone a significant expansion in recent years. Since 2017, the team has grown from a modest group of 12 individuals working across just three countries to a robust force of over 100 staff members spread across 14 nations by 2024. This growth reflects GGGI’s commitment to supporting sustainable and inclusive development throughout the LAC region.
In 2024, GGGI manages a substantial project portfolio valued at US$6.5 million within Central America. This portfolio encompasses Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. Furthermore, GGGI has a resource mobilization pipeline exceeding US$8 million, demonstrating the organization’s continued efforts to secure funding for critical initiatives. Notably, the majority of projects in Central America focus on delivering practical solutions that promote both low-carbon emissions and social inclusion, with a particular emphasis on the Sustainable Landscape sector.
A prime example of GGGI’s impactful work in the region is the collaborative program established with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Finance and Public Credit. This technical assistance initiative, titled “Mobilizing Climate Finance and Private Investments for Low-Carbon Development in Nicaragua,” is funded by the Green Climate Fund’s Readiness and Preparatory Support Program. The program aims to empower the Nicaraguan government by enhancing its institutional capacity, strengthening its strategic frameworks, and developing a robust project pipeline. Ultimately, these efforts will enable Nicaragua to attract greater national and international climate finance and private investments. This will significantly contribute to the implementation of the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and its overall low-carbon development goals.
In El Salvador, GGGI serves as the implementing partner for two impactful projects funded by the Republic of Korea. The first project, “Strengthening Capacities of Women and Youth for Implementation of Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) in El Salvador,” is financed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA). This initiative focuses on empowering women and young people to play a more active role in implementing climate-smart agricultural practices. The second project, “Korea-Mexico-Three Central American Countries Triangular Cooperation Project on Strengthening Capacities for Forest Landscape Restoration in Response to Climate Change,” is a collaborative effort funded by the
Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). This project, implemented across Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, tackles the critical challenge of forest landscape restoration in the face of climate change.
