Job Summary
Action Against Hunger is seeking a dedicated Community Mobilization Specialist for a five-year USAID-funded Urban Health Activity in Kampala, Mukono, and Wakiso, Uganda. You will focus on building strong relationships within these communities, promoting health awareness, and fostering participation in our health programs. Your work will be pivotal in ensuring that community members are actively involved in the design and implementation of health solutions that directly affect their lives.

Purpose:
As the Community Mobilization Specialist, you will develop and lead community engagement strategies to enhance the effectiveness of health interventions. Your role will support the creation of sustainable health practices within urban communities through active participation and empowerment.

Engagement:
You will work closely with local leaders, health workers, NGOs, and other stakeholders to build robust networks that facilitate community involvement in health initiatives.

Delivery:
You will implement community engagement activities, ensuring they are inclusive, effective, and aligned with broader health goals. Your efforts will contribute to improved health outcomes by mobilizing community resources and fostering long-term health commitments.

KEY ACTIVITIES IN YOUR ROLE WILL INCLUDE:

Essential Job Duties

  • Design and execute community mobilization strategies that effectively engage urban populations in health programs.
  • Conduct regular community outreach sessions to raise awareness about health issues and services available.
  • Collaborate with local organizations and health facilities to strengthen community health networks.
  • Develop materials and tools to support community health education and promotion.
  • Organize and facilitate community meetings and workshops to gather input and feedback on health initiatives.
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of community mobilization efforts, adapting strategies as necessary to meet program goals.
  • Serve as a liaison between the community and health service providers to ensure services are culturally appropriate and meet community needs.
  • Support the integration of community feedback into program planning and implementation.
  • Foster strong partnerships with local leaders to ensure sustained engagement and support for health initiatives.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • May involve leading a small team of community liaisons or volunteers, ensuring their effective collaboration in community engagement activities.

Fiscal Responsibility

  • Manage budget allocations for community mobilization activities, ensuring resources are used efficiently to maximize impact.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • This position involves frequent local travel to community sites and requires flexibility to work outside regular office hours as needed.

DO YOU MEET THE PROFILE REQUIRED CRITERIA?

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Public Health, Community Development, or a related field.
  • At least five years of experience in community mobilization, preferably within health-focused initiatives in urban settings.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Proven track record in successfully developing and implementing community engagement strategies.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of effectively working with diverse community groups.
  • Experience in facilitating workshops, meetings, and community gatherings.
  • Knowledge of the health challenges and opportunities within urban areas of Uganda.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced and challenging environment.
  • Fluent in English and local languages spoken in Kampala, Mukono, and Wakiso.

Desirable

  • Experience with USAID or other donor-funded projects.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
