Job Description

Job Overview: The community outreach assistant will play a key role in ensuring vulnerable refugees and immigrants served by the IRC in New Jersey have the information, tools, and understanding to be healthy and effectively navigate local systems, benefits, and resources. The community outreach assistant supports IRCs health and wellness education and programming efforts. They will provide outreach, education, and health promotion services.

Major Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct outreach to local refugee populations using identified community health education materials
  • Facilitate in-language health education programming related to clients’ overall health and wellness, including health systems navigation, COVID-19 safety, patient rights, mental health and psychosocial support, and other relevant health education needs, in individual and small group formats.
  • Carry out health and wellness intakes with newcomers within one week of client arrival.
  • Submit New Jersey Family Care applications for clients and advocate for the client with NJFC when needed.
  • Prepare and accompany clients to initial health screenings while teaching them how to advocate for themselves, make appointments, obtain transportation, and other relevant skills as needed.
  • Link clients to healthcare and social service resources and providers. 
  • Review, edit, and provide material feedback on produced content and other materials relating to IRCs health and wellness education and outreach efforts.  
  • Continuously expand knowledge and understanding of community resources, services, and programs available to clients and educate clients on how to access such resources.
  • Help develop and deliver innovative ideas for engaging community members (i.e., Facebook Live events, WhatsApp groups, etc.).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements: 

Work Experience: 

  • At least six months of experience working with diverse populations, including English language learners
  • At least six months of experience providing social services or health programming for vulnerable populations

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies: 

  • Ability to use email, video conferencing, phone, and basic MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Proven commitment to maintaining confidentiality on sensitive and private communications
  • Proven success in achieving goals and working effectively with all levels of staff in a multicultural environment.

Education:  N/A

Language Skills:  Spoken and written fluency in English and at least one of the following languages: Arabic, Dari, or Pashto.

Certificates or Licenses: Certificate in interpretation and/or translation preferred.

Working Environment:  Standard office working environment (NJ office is currently under a hybrid working structure, and the person in this role is expected to be in-person at least 3 days/week).

Compensation: Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget.  Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirements.
