Community Outreach (NPS, Lake Mead Recreation Area)

The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with NPS at Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Boulder City NV within the division of Visitor and Resource Protection, is recruiting to fill two positions as Public Safety Community Outreach Research Associate’s. Under the direction of the National Park Service Staff, the selected candidates primary focus will be to perform a variety of duties associated with preventing visitor injury and deaths from occurring in the Recreation Area, including motorcycle safety within the boundaries in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Duties of the position will include:

Outreach

Identify targeted user groups and plan outreach events, actions, and materials to maximize impact of outreach efforts. Develop and deliver presentations and talks. Compile, record, review, and assemble information and data needed to develop and distribute outreach materials and track outreach activities. Set up and removing materials and supplies and staff booths at outreach events. Though outreach events, materials development, and other mechanisms of outreach (such as social media or other media platforms), provide target audiences with visitor safety-related information and education.

Site Assessment

Conduct assessment of various park resources including signage and roads along with other factors that impact visitor safety. This position will also evaluate vegetation along roads and areas for concern with threatened or endangered species.  While conducting assessments, provide visitors with information and education to ensure their safety, obtain their cooperation, and facilitate safe visitor use of park resources. Identify and report visitor/resource problems and/or violations of regulations concerning the use of protected or public land areas.

Education

Develop and present formal and informal visitor safety-related educational programs, materials, and/or media using commonly occurring educational practices, techniques, and tools. The programs and materials may be delivered in-person and through educational media and technology. Conduct research on well-established visitor safety-related topics (e.g., motorcycle crashes, motor vehicle crashes, drowning, hiking safety, heat illness, sanitation) and synthesize the knowledge gained from research to develop and deliver educational visitor safety experiences based on the direct application of established policies, practices, and criteria.

Data Collection

Collect and organize field data (e.g., visitation, accidents, sanitation, resource impacts). Record all data collected and utilize a variety of computer programs to compile, reduce, store, retrieve, and report data and other visitor safety-related information.

Administration

Provide administrative assistance to employees or the supervisor in the completion of a variety of well-defined administrative projects, questions, or problems that arise within the Visitor and Resource Protection program of the Recreation Area.

Contract Timeline

  • 41 week (10 month) appointment beginning in late August/ September pending successful completion of DOI Background Investigation
  • Full Time  (40 Hours per week)

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Wage: $29/hr.
  • Include as appropriate:

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, education or community outreach, or related discipline, or a combination of relevant education
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Reliable, independent worker with strong communication skills
  • Enthusiasm about the position, with interest in and knowledge of community outreach and education
  • Proven experience in developing and presenting outreach materials
  • Possession of a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license
  • Strong customer service skills

(Because the agreement under which this position is being advertised is a Public Lands Corps Youth Assistance Agreement, all applicants must be between the ages of 17 and 30 years old at time of application.)
