The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development was founded in 1991 when communism was crumbling in Europe and ex-Soviet countries needed support to nurture a new private sector and democracy. Today we invest to help build market economies from central Europe to central Asia and the southern and eastern Mediterranean. We are now the largest single investor in our region. Owned by 69 countries and two intergovernmental institutions, we provide project financing for banks, industries and businesses. We also work with publicly owned companies to support privatisation, restructure state-owned firms and improve municipal services. Wherever we are active, we promote policies that bolster the business climate.

Are you a recent graduate excited to embark on your career? Do you want to make a positive difference in the world? Are you excited to work with talented individuals from across the globe on life-changing investment projects?
If you’re nodding along to these questions and you think you have the skills and interest to help us develop and implement innovative solutions to international development challenges, then read on to see if the Competitiveness and Governance Analyst role in our International Professionals Programme is for you.
Who are we? “It’s Banking, but not as you know it”
Since its creation, the EBRD has championed competition, openness, and transparency as principles of good governance in markets. In view of the remaining gaps across the EBRD region and new global challenges, the Bank’s mission to support the creation of markets and uphold market principles remains highly relevant.
The Competitiveness and Governance (CG) team works across the Bank to combine investment, policy dialogue and technical assistance where it has leverage to drive reforms – especially in the context of large public sector projects. This requires close collaboration between the CG team and banking as well as other policy teams in the identification of transformational investments as well as the design and delivery of policy interventions.
What are we offering? “Not your average 9-5”
Our 24-month International Professionals Programme (IPP) is an immersive, focused and supportive programme for successful graduates to unleash their potential and kick-start a career at the EBRD.
The IPP is made up of assignments designed to provide meaningful, hands on experience, and the opportunity to develop your skills alongside top subject matter experts in a range of fields. There will be rotations through banking departments, as well as an assignment to one of our Resident Offices, deepening your understanding of and engagement with the very core of the EBRD’s mission and impact in our countries of operations.
During the programme you will undertake a tailored learning and development plan which encompasses in-depth technical training as well as personal and business skills development. You will be supported by your line manager, and a dedicated Programme Manager.
What does the role of a Competitiveness and Governance Analyst look like?
As a Competitiveness and Governance Analyst, you will help fostering sound governance at enterprise, sector, and economy level by working in a highly skilled team at the forefront of state-owned enterprise and sector reform. You will support the integrated investment and policy delivery by initially being deployed alongside policy experts working on regulated industries and sectors with state presence, primarily telecoms and infrastructure (water) sectors. This entails supporting the design and delivery of policy activities, needs and gap assessment to determine interventions, and policy dialogue with regulators and ministries to advocate for reforms in conjunction with EBRD investments. The role also involves all tasks related to the EBRD project life cycle, including project origination, structuring, execution and monitoring. As needed, you will support other special projects related to the delivery of the Bank’s economic governance objectives.
What are we looking for? “We embrace difference, to make a difference”
In addition to initiative and a sense of adventure, we are also looking for diverse candidates who have the following:

A diverse workforce with the right knowledge and skills enables connection with our clients, brings pioneering ideas, energy and innovation. The EBRD staff is characterised by its rich diversity of nationalities, cultures and opinions and we aim to sustain and build on this strength. As such, the EBRD seeks to ensure that everyone is treated with respect and given equal opportunities and works in an inclusive environment. The EBRD encourages all qualified candidates who are nationals of the EBRD member countries to apply regardless of their racial, ethnic, religious and cultural background, gender, sexual orientation or disabilities. As an inclusive employer, we promote flexible working and expecting our employee to attend the office 50% of their working time.

Right to Work in the UK: Swiss nationals (and all other non-UK employees) can work in the UK without a Visa – working at the EBRD gives all employees “exempt status”. The Bank however encourages all non-UK employees to obtain an Exempt Vignette (EV) prior to relocating to the UK, as without an EV you may face more questions at Border Control and when required to show evidence of their exempt status when renting accommodation under the Right to Rent legislation. The application process may take 3 – 4 weeks approx. outside of the UK.
