Job Description:

The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the National Park Service, is recruiting 1 Compliance Liaison Research Associate for Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco, CA . Under the direction of the Chief of Natural Resources and Science, the selected candidate will be the lead compliance liaison for Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) routine maintenance on their infrastructure within the park. In this role, they will review proposed PG&E project work, coordinate with Natural and Cultural Resources subject matter experts, and conduct field visits and on site monitoring of PG&E work.

Duties Include:

  • Be the primary point of contact for PG&E project work with park Natural and Cultural Resources staff;
  • Review PG&E proposed project work and liaise with park Natural and Cultural Resources staff to understand and communicate potential project impacts as needed;
  •  Streamline communications between PG&E and park staff;
  •  Conduct field visits to assess biological resources at proposed project sites;
  •  Conduct on-site monitoring while projects are underway;
  •  Conduct biological sensitivity tailgates with PG&E contractors to communicate site-specific resource issues.

This position includes a mix of both office-based and field-based work. Office-based work requires computer work and extended periods of sitting or standing. Field-based work will require moderate to strenuous physical exertion, including hiking with 20 to 30 lbs of gear up steep slopes and/or over uneven terrain. Field work involves driving a vehicle for commutes to field sites. Some work may occur along busy roadsides or popular trails. Common environmental hazards associated with field work include poison oak (those with strong reactions should know that exposure is frequent and sometimes unavoidable), ticks, strong winds, and inclement weather.

Contract Timeline:

  • Full-time; average of 40 hr/wk.
  • 46-week appointment beginning in April 2024 (pending availability and completion of DOI Background Investigation)

Location:

Office work will be based out of Fort Cronkhite in Sausalito, CA and may be a mix of telework and in person office work. Field work will occur throughout Golden Gate National Recreation Area including Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo Counties.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Wage: $27/hr.
  • Health, Dental, Vision Insurance premiums are covered 100% by GBI (Available on the first day of the month following the start of employment).

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science or related discipline, or a combination of relevant education and field experience;
  • Enthusiasm about the position, with interest in and knowledge of California ecosystems;
  • Familiarity with native and invasive plants of California’s central coast is preferred but not required;
  • Ability to safely navigate to field sites using maps/compass and handheld GPS devices; 
  • Ability to communicate well via both written and oral communication with a variety of audiences including park staff and contractors; 
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Reliable, team-player with strong leadership skills;
  • Possession of a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license.
