POSITION SUMMARY 

This position is an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated, highly capable person with a diverse skill set to advance TU’s conservation efforts in Connecticut. The Connecticut Project Manager will identify and implement projects to improve watershed condition, improve fish passage by the removal or replacement of barriers to accommodate fish movement, restore stream and riparian habitat, and improve stream flows and water quality in the priority waters of the state. 

This work will require an individual who is action and solution-oriented, works well with diverse stakeholders and personalities, and can build a program from the ground-up. The chosen candidate  will need to demonstrate strong project management skills and follow-through, community outreach experience, and experience related to river restoration, hydrology, aquatic ecology and partnership-building. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Identify, develop, and manage specific coldwater habitat assessment, protection, restoration, and research projects.
  • Help assess existing watershed conditions through desktop aerial photography review, existing data gathering, and use of existing ecological prioritization models.
  • Participate in and collect data on activities such as temperature monitoring, culvert assessments, and instream habitat surveys.
  • Ensure proper data collection, sampling and safety protocols are followed.
  • Provide data entry and database management, as well as prepare maps and written reports.
  • Actively identify and pursue potential funding sources, including writing grant proposals and budgets, for high priority projects and develop relationships with funders.
  • Develop and coordinate project timelines, scope of work, and budgets.
  • Coordinate and facilitate volunteer activities in support of specific conservation projects.
  • Coordinate implementation of funded projects.
  • Work with TU partners and funders to build a comprehensive network of community, nonprofit, business, and agency partners within the watershed.
  • Coordinate and implement communications and outreach efforts, including press opportunities to highlight project implementation, when and where appropriate.
  • Develop timely activity reports, financial reports and annual reports to describe the work accomplished, planned, and initiated.
  • Outreach to current and potential partners to include counties and towns within the watershed.
  • Attend meetings of TU chapters, watershed groups, and other partnering groups as needed.
  • Provide assistance to other program staff as needed.
  • Participate as the Long Island Sound River  Restoration Network TU representative.
  • Complete administration tasks including timesheet management, expense reporting, invoicing and tracking project budgets.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, environmental sciences, or other related natural resources field required, master’s degree a plus.
  • A working knowledge of principles and practices of fisheries and aquatic resource management with a particular emphasis on stream habitat requirements of brook trout.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, and supervise multiphase stream restoration projects.
  • Professional experience in project management, permitting and construction oversight and management.
  • Knowledge of the region and CT watersheds.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with multiple and diverse partners in a highly collaborative and inclusive manner, even on contentious issues.
  • Proficiency in GIS spatial data platforms, using handheld computers to record field data, and other technology skills.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Excellent written and oral communication, organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Demonstrated performance in grant writing and other fundraising activities.
  • Experience with communications, outreach and volunteer engagement.
  • Ability to work independently while managing complex projects; demonstrated ability to prioritize workload, be highly motivated and self-directed.
  • Ability and willingness to travel; valid driver’s license and own vehicle required.
