Salary: $4,987.00 – $6,705.00 Monthly

Responsibilities:

  • Determines timber cruise sampling and layout methods and estimates the gross and net volume per assigned cruise area.
  • Ensures cruising data meets DNR Timber Cruising Handbook standards.
  • Lays out cruise patterns, counts trees, estimates heights, observes species, estimates the extent of defects, and assigns a grade, makes mathematical projections from samples to calculate estimates of grade, species, and value of the entire conservation easement area.
  • Ensures cruising data is statistically sound.
  • Maintains fluent use of agency software such as Microsoft Word and Excel as well as the Atterbury Cruise method to analyze cruise data and produce accurate cruise narratives and reports.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in forest management, natural resource management, or related field;
    OR 4 years experience in timber cruising.
  • Demonstrated experience with all aspects of timber cruising and mensuration including different sampling systems for timber cruising, analyzing and explaining sampling statistics and sample design, and interpreting and reporting cruise information and product descriptions.
  • Advanced level proficiency and knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe applications.
  • Demonstrated experience using software designed to gather and report timber cruise data.
  • Demonstrated experience collecting data using a Global Positioning System (GPS) in a forest setting.
  • Demonstrated experience creating a GIS database using mapping software.
  • Ability to work independently with creative adaptability.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with management and stakeholders.
  • Convey messages clearly and persuasively.
