Conservation Educator

ABOUT THE POSITION:
The purpose of this position is to educate the public on environmental topics through formal and informal programming and activities. This position is based at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, a bureau of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Conduct educational programming in relation to environmental conservation, wildlife, and natural resource management at the museum and offsite locations such as schools and libraries.
• Interact with museum visitors through engaging animal/habitat interpretation.
• Assist in the planning and application of museum-wide educational events.
• Facilitate conservation-based workshops (including Project Wet and Project WILD) for educators.
• Develop educational programs and material aligned with MDWFP’s mission and state curriculum standards.
• Plan and lead engaging, nature-based seasonal camps for youth.
• Assist with care and handling of animal ambassadors including reptiles, mammals, amphibians, and birds.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

• Ability to work independently.
• Perform other related duties as required.
• Attend meetings and trainings and serve on advisory committees as required or time permits.
• Complete various office reports including updates and evaluations of programming.
• Provide general information and assistance to the public.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in education, biological/environmental science, or closely related field.

PREFERRED MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:
Individual must have: excellent inter-personal, written, and oral communication skills; teaching and/or public speaking experience; knowledge of matters pertinent to conservation and wildlife; general knowledge of computer databases.
