Supervisor: Outreach Coordinator and Education Specialist

Position Summary:
This is a part time 9-month term salaried position with American Bird Conservancy working to gain environmental outreach and education experience with the Stopping Plastics and Litter Along Shorelines (SPLASh) program. The purpose of this fellowship is to gain practical experience and knowledge in the conservation field. The fellow will be mentored by staff from American Bird Conservancy, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
The Conservation Fellow will work with the Education Specialist and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Houston Community Engagement program (HCPE) to develop TEKS-aligned wildlife conservation lessons to be used at education and outreach events. The Conservation Fellow will also work with the Outreach Coordinator to plan and organize bioblitzes, cleanups, and outreach events in the Houston-Galveston region as well as support the SPLASh team with all programming for the duration of the fellowship.
This position will be based from a home office. Travel will be necessary throughout the Texas Upper Coast and a reliable personal vehicle will be required to complete work activities.
Primary Duties:
- Work alongside SPLASh staff at outreach events and educational programming.
- Work with the Education Specialist and HCPE team to develop new wildlife focused curriculum.
- Work with the Outreach Coordinator to organize BioBlitz & outreach events.
Position Requirements:
- Must be a US citizen or permanent resident of the United States, with a valid state driver’s license.
- Preference to college students or recent graduates with coursework in education, outdoor education, natural resources, biology, or a related field.
- General knowledge of the Upper Texas Coast and Avian Ecology is helpful.
- Excitement for the natural world and a demonstrated ability to share it with others.
- Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team, be detail-oriented and organized, and follow oral and written directions.
- Ability to work with a flexible and changing schedule. Must be able to work some weekends.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds independently, and up to 50 pounds with assistance.
- Highly committed to conservation and to ABC’s conservation mission.
