Job Purpose:
The Conservation Impact Manager will lead the development and implementation of a robust Monitoring and Evaluation system across WCS’ key conservation landscapes and protected area projects in Africa. This system will be used to measure WCS’s conservation impact across our field programs in Africa. They will achieve this by working with country programs and landscape leads to ensure that the appropriate database systems, staff capacity and training is in place to support the rollout of such a rigorous impact monitoring system.

Major Responsibilities: (10 Main responsibilities)
 

  • Develop and implement a robust M&E Strategy and relevant guidelines, tools and templates for tracking progress and impact across WCS’ Africa protected area portfolio.
  • Drive the use of standardised data collection tools and indicators to ensure optimal decision-making across all field sites in Africa, and ensure that this data informs the development of landscape and/or species-specific management plans.
  • Measure achievement toward program goals and results through the M&E system.
  • Conduct regular field visits to train project staff in the use of data management and analysis tools for project staff following relevant best practices.
  • Regularly analyse and synthesize data across field sites to track progress in attaining site-specific targets.
  • Liaise with landscape leads to ensure all elements of the data system are utilized effectively, and coordinate with field-based managers to implement system corrections and adjustments.
  • Ensure cross-coordination with an M&E initiative at the WCS global level to develop a centralized Impact Platform to develop standard indicators and capture relevant data.
  • Work with communications and other staff to ensure that impact monitoring feeds into reporting and wider communications materials.

Qualification Requirements

Minimum Requirements and Job Skills (Required):
  • Master’s degree in conservation science or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of proven experience and skills in developing monitoring, evaluation and research protocols and tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, inspire and mentor a team
  • Proven proficiency and working experience implementing impact measuring systems,
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Proficient in GIS and related software packages
  • Proficient in conservation monitoring technology and methodologies e.g. SMART, camera traps, GPS collars, transects
  • Highly adept with various software, including spreadsheets, databases, data analysis, presentations, and statistics.
  • Resource management, training, capacity building, coaching, and mentoring skills
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills (written and oral).
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
  • English/French fluency preferred.
  • Experience working in at least one African country is highly desirable.
