Auckland Zoo’s mission is to ‘Bring people together to build a future for wildlife’. Through science, learning & training, and strengthening our relationship with Te Ao Māori, we strive for excellence in animal care & welfare, conserve wildlife in the wild and nurture a lifelong connection with nature to enhance the well-being of our communities.

This role is a senior position within the Conservation Advocacy and Engagement Department.

The role reflects the Zoo’s strategic roadmap to expand meaningful and inspirational connections with diverse audiences to deliver impactful conservation and social outcomes.

This role requires flexible working, including some evening and weekend work, which may include public holidays as required to manage and deliver the role’s portfolio.

This is a parental leave cover position that would ideally start in September 2024 until the end of April 2025.

The role focuses on 4 main programmatic areas outlined in the position description attached: PD

You will be highly motivated and enjoy the challenge of leading teams to create, deliver, and evaluate innovative programmes that improve outcomes for people and nature. You will be knowledgeable, empathetic, resilient, and solution focused. In addition, you will enjoy working with a range of internal and external stakeholders, and you will be passionate about communities, wildlife and care deeply about the world around you.

Qualifications

  • A degree in a relevant discipline is essential
  • A post-graduate qualification or equivalent proven experience in a relevant discipline is desirable.

Experience/Skills

  • Extensive experience in learning, training and/or community programmes strategic and operational management and mission-driven KPIs
  • Extensive experience in developing, implementing and evaluating educational and/or community programmes and activities
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and experience of community engagement, conservation advocacy, conservation learning and training.
  • Proven expertise in relevant pedagogical, behavioural and communication theories and approaches
  • Knowledge of the Treaty of Waitangi and Māori environmental and conservation initiatives
  • Knowledge of the New Zealand curriculum, Te Whāriki, Ka Hikitia – Ka Hāpaitia, the World Zoo and Aquarium Conservation Education Strategy, EAZA Conservation Education Standards, UN Sustainable Development Goals and Ocean Literacy framework.

Flexible, hybrid working is an option for some of the days of work, along with an option to discuss part-time fulfilment of this role (please specify in your cover letter).

NZ$100k  – $110k per annum based on 40 hours per week and previous skillset and experience.
