We are the City of greener futures

About us

At the City of London, we’re committed to putting people first. From working towards greener
futures, to improving lives in our communities, we’re constantly at the forefront of an
ever-changing political landscape. As a Conservation Officer, you’ll work at the forefront of
our Natural Environment Division, playing a leading role in protecting and enhancing
exceptional nature reserves.

Our staff do incredible work. In return we invest in them, giving them all the tools they need
to do the best work they can – plus a generous benefits package. Join us and do all kinds of
extraordinary things.

About the role

Joining our team in Burnham Beeches and Stoke Common in Buckinghamshire, you’ll help manage
these nationally and internationally recognised nature reserves. Consisting of 300 ha of
ancient woodland, wood pasture, valley bog and heathland, and home to one of the most important
places for ancient trees in the country, these nature reserves are visited by over 600,000
people each year.

You’ll help plan, deliver, monitor and evaluate conservation management programmes and work to
identify and develop appropriate grant and other income opportunities. Protecting the ancient
tree heritage of Burnham Beeches will include coordinating veteran tree management and research
as well as promoting the work we do. Another key part of the role is developing and
implementing site-based and landscape-scale conservation measures with local partners. You’ll
develop and execute conservation strategies and plans as well as biodiversity research and
surveys. This will involve liaising with a wide range of colleagues and organisations.

About you

A confident communicator with a degree, or equivalent experience, in a related subject area.
You will have experience of designing, implementing and writing up ecological surveys,
monitoring programmes and research projects across a wide variety of habitats. With experience
of veteran tree and wood pasture conservation and management, you’ll have demonstrable flora
and fauna identification skills, and a broad knowledge of UK and European habitats and wildlife
legislation.

On a personal level, you’ll have the ability to build and maintain excellent working
relationships and have experience of delivering presentations to a high standard. You’ll be a
true team player, and a person passionate about protecting natural places. This is a fantastic
opportunity to join a team putting nature first, and to supercharge your career in the process.
