Conservation Science Coordinator

The Conservation Science Coordinator will lead and manage conservation initiatives within the lower CT River estuary. Duties include coordinating research projects, analyzing biodiversity data, and developing conservation strategies to mitigate threats to the local environment. The coordinator will work with scientists, stakeholders, and 
communities to promote sustainable practices. Expertise in ecology and environmental science is essential. 

Under the direction of the RTPEC Director, the Conservation Science Coordinator implements approved conservation science program objectives. This includes providing program support, outreach and communication, research and analysis, and collaborative engagement. The Coordinator works with staff, member-leaders, and stakeholders to support grassroots involvement, conduct research, and engage with volunteers. Duties include developing and implementing conservation science program strategies, making presentations, writing social media posts and newsletters, and conducting surveys. The coordinator collaborates with other departments and teams to align conservation efforts with organizational goals, advancing RTPEC’s initiatives and promoting environmental conservation at various levels.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Conservation Strategy and Implementation. Assist in developing and implementing strategies for conservation programs and projects in accordance with CAS-RTPEC strategic goals. Provide support in monitoring, analyzing, and evaluating initiatives, and new developments affecting conservation issues in our region. Work with staff, partners, and other groups to identify, recruit, coordinate, and facilitate volunteer involvement in conservation programs.
  • Outreach and Communication. Assist in making presentations regarding conservation efforts. Support conservation project and program efforts by assisting in communicating with the RTPEC Director. Draft communication items including social media posts, press releases, newsletters, flyers, etc.
  • Research and Analysis. Conduct surveys, investigations, and research needed to achieve objectives of conservation programs. Stay updated on current trends in conservation programs in our region. Provide support in monitoring, analyzing, and evaluating the regional landscape, current initiatives, and new developments affecting the lower CT River Estuary.
  • Collaborative Engagement. Contribute to task forces, committees, and coalitions etc. that advance RTPEC’s objective or mission. Engage with volunteers and community members to build relationships and support conservation efforts. Collaborate with other departments and teams within the organization to align conservation efforts with overall organizational goals.
  • Science in Nature and Non-School Education Programs. Implement Connecticut Audubon Society’s programs including their K-12 education program, Science in Nature, as well as adult, family, youth and summer camp programs. Plan and implement creative, hands-on and engaging programs for diverse age groups. Supports program logistics including setup/cleanup and materials preparation.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following skills, experience and competencies:

  • Understanding of conservation principles, environmental issues, and current trends in conservation programs and policies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, board of directors, and other partners to achieve conservation objectives.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences, including community members.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills to plan, coordinate, and implement conservation campaigns and initiatives.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative, while also being a team player in a fast-paced environment.
