Conservation Science Technician

The Conservation Science Technicians will serve alongside conservancy field staff conducting primarily ecological monitoring and wildlife surveys within the Walker River Basin.  Technicians will work in teams of three to four (two to three technicians and a crew lead) to conduct vegetation and ecological monitoring surveys within the walker basin watershed.

Crews will typically work four 10-hour days reporting to the field station on a daily basis. Occasional hitch work requiring overnight camping will be required.

The ideal candidate will:

• Possess experience, knowledge and skills related to natural resources sampling, and data management.
• Comfortable performing repetitive tasks with high accuracy and precision.
• Be organized and efficient in the field and work well in a team both leading and taking direction.
• Comfortable working outside in remote settings and camping in the field.

Expectations and Core Accountabilities

• Conduct vegetation monitoring activities utilizing terrestrial Assessment, Inventory and Monitoring (AIM); wetland Assessment, Inventory and Monitoring (AIM) protocols;
• Integrated Monarch Monitoring Protocols (IMMP); and other ecological monitoring.
• Collect vegetation and soil data (i.e. species richness, canopy cover, soil texture).
• Utilize dichotomous keys to identify plants to species.
• 4×4 driving on unmaintained roads with 4WD trucks or UTVs.
• Perform data management, including ensuring proper and complete data collection in the field utilizing Survey123 and Field Maps.
• Foster a positive and productive team by fostering a cooperative and supportive environment.

• Ability to keep organized and detailed data records utilizing ESRI applications (Survey123 and FieldMaps).
• Ability to collaborate and communicate in a small team and work individually when necessary.
• Working knowledge of plant identification, as well as experience with habitat monitoring, particularly Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) methods preferred but not required.
• Ability to work outside in remote locations, sometimes independently and in extreme weather conditions. Work sites maybe require navigating rough roads with 4×4 trucks or UTVs.
