Art Contest: Visualizing Women’s Rights and Feminist Movements

 Introduction

This art contest aims to engage feminist and activist artists from Iraq in developing original artworks inspired by research analyzing the current effects of Iraq’s political and economic transitions on women’s rights organizations (WROs), networks, and movements.  The project seeks to amplify the voices of Iraqi women, highlight their struggles and achievements, and foster dialogue on women’s rights through art. The selected artworks will be used to enhance the visual impact of the publication/research and other public events, ensuring the message reaches a broader audience.

 Objectives:

  • To develop visual materials that will enhance the impact of the publication.
  • To provide a platform for Iraqi feminist and activist artists to showcase their perspectives on women’s rights and feminist movements.
  • To commission original artworks that reflect the themes of women’s rights and feminist movements in Iraq.
  • To support and promote the work of feminist and activist artists from Iraq.
  • To create a visual dialogue around the publication’s content, making it more accessible and engaging.
  • To acquire ten outstanding artworks for integration into the publication and other public events.

 Scope of Work:

The selected artist will:

  • Review the certain parts of the publication analyzing women’s rights and feminist movements in Iraq.
  • Develop original artworks (e.g., paintings, illustrations, digital art, or mixed media) inspired by the publication’s themes.
  • Submit up to 3 artworks for evaluation by the selection committee.
  • Collaborate with the project team to ensure the artworks align with the publication’s objectives and messaging.

Selection Process:

  • A committee representing 20 women’s rights organizations across different areas in Iraq will evaluate the submitted artworks.
  • The committee will assess the artworks based on creativity, relevance to the publication’s themes, technical quality, and impact.
  • The top 10 artworks will be selected for acquisition.

 Compensation and Ownership:

  • Each of the 10 selected artworks will be acquired by Oxfam for a prize of $500.
  • The artworks will become the property of Oxfam and may be used in the graphic design of the publication, public exhibitions, or other events related to women’s rights and feminist movements.
  • The artist will be credited for their work in all uses of the artwork.
  • Non-winning artists retain all rights to their submitted work.

 Timeline:

    • Call for artists: March 9, 2025
    • Submission deadline: March 19, 2025
    • Review and selection: March 19-23, 2025
    • Notification of selected artists: March 23, 2025
    • Delivery of final artworks: May 25, 2025

 Responsibilities:

Oxfam will:

  • Provide the summary of the publication and necessary background materials to the selected artist.
  • Organize the selection process and coordinate with the evaluation committee.
  • Compensate the selected artists and ensure proper credit for their work.
  • Utilize the artworks in the publication and other public events.

The Artist will:

  • Create original artworks inspired by the publication’s themes.
  • Submit high-quality digital copies of the artworks by the deadline.
  • Grant Oxfam the rights to use the artworks as outlined in this document.

 Evaluation Committee:The committee will consist of representatives from 20 women’s rights organizations, ensuring a diverse and inclusive evaluation process. The committee’s decision will be final and binding.

 Acknowledgments:

Oxfam acknowledges the vital role of art in social transformation and is committed to supporting feminist and activist artists. This project is a collaboration between Oxfam, women’s rights organizations, and the artistic community to advance gender equality and amplify women’s voices in Iraq.

How To Apply

Submission Guidelines:

  • Artists must submit a portfolio of previous work, a brief artist statement (max 500 words) explaining the concept and relation to the publication, and a proposal outlining their approach to the project.
  • Each artist may submit up to two original artworks.
  • Submissions should be sent via email to irqconsultancy@oxfam.org.uk  by 19th March 2025
  • Submissions must be in digital format (JPEG/PNG, minimum 300 dpi resolution) or scanned high-quality images for physical works.
  • Shortlisted artists will be notified by March 23rd , 2025.#
