DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Delivery of Lectures for 10 weeks, 3 hours per week (3,75 days);

2. Continuous Assessment; Exercises, Assignments, Mid-Semester Exams, and End of Semester Exams (5 days).

BACKGROUND
The land degradation neutrality programme is designed by the University of Energy and Natural Resources in collaboration with the Group on Earth Observation (GEO) on Land Degradation Neutrality and the German International Corporation (GIZ). The MPhil programme in Land Degradation Neutrality is, therefore, a direct response of UENR to local, national, and international quests to deal with the diverse land degradation challenges of the 21st Century. The programme is designed to equip students with knowledge and skills to generate and apply geodata for sustainable land management. The programme will equip students with emerging trends in global land management and equip them with research skills that will enable them to conduct relevant research and formulate place-based strategies to halt and reverse land degradation and to improve land productivity. The programme aims to provide aspiring research scientists with advanced knowledge and skills to competently analyse land management problems and generate policy solutions. In order to add international experience in academia and on land degradation, Geo introducing a guest lecturer position in Computer Programming. The course introduces students to programming languages both for statistical and spatial data management through both theory and hands-on practical sessions. Students will be introduced to programming concepts, including programme structure, variable declaration, looping structures, control structures, and syntax. The course will cover principles of programming including input and output basics, algorithms, problem-solving, and data structures and their classifications. The course will also include basic data management, data cleaning, graphs, basic statistics, regression, analysis of variance, and linear models as an introductory program. The course also explores the use of programming language in map preparation, including basic plotting exercises such as creating static maps, animated maps and interactive maps. Students will use case studies to practice solving real-world issues by using Computer Programming. The course will introduce students to python programming as well.

DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT
1. Submission of Report on Students’ Assessments (2 days).

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
PhD in Computer Science with focus on geographical databases.
Experience
– Teaching – courses in msc and phd programs: 20 years.

– Doctorate and master students advised: 50 students or more.

– Papers published in indexed journals: 50 or more.

– Lectures in international events and colloquia: 50 or more.

– Citations (google scholar): 16.000 citations or more.

– Proven experience with the group on earth observations: applying earth observations to find answers to the environmental challenges of our planet.

Other requirements
– Proficient: R, C++, C, Haskell.

– Familiar: python, FORTRAN, PHP, PASCAL, PostgreSQL.

– OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE DEVELOPED: 3 or more.

Languages
Excellent knowledge of English (both oral and written). Knowledge of other official languages of WMO would be an advantage.
