Salary: £45,000 – 55,000 dependent on experience, plus performance-related bonus (following
completion of probation period)
Contract: 1 year contract (with the expectation of the role becoming permanent subject to
performance) full-time; starting September 2024

ARC Ecological Services Ltd is a consultancy that provides professional ecological services and
donates its profits to the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust (ARC), a national charity.
In doing so, ARC Ecological Services Ltd increases the capacity for ARC to undertake important
conservation work, as well as demonstrating good practice in the consultancy sector. ARC
Ecological Services Ltd largely focuses on advice relating to reptiles and amphibians.

ARC Ecological Services Ltd is seeking a Consultancy Manager as it enters a new period of
growth. Your main roles would be to manage the development of the consultancy, secure new
business, to oversee the delivery of contracts, and to lead on particular aspects of contract
delivery. We anticipate that the role would suit an experienced ecologist looking to move into
consultancy management. The Consultancy Manager will recruit and subsequently line manage an
additional Ecologist post, to be advertised later in 2024. The Consultancy Manager will be
responsible for ensuring that contracts are delivered to time, budget and quality. Depending on
the nature of the work, contract delivery may involve the Ecologist post, sub-contractors or
ARC staff, and the Consultancy Manager will be responsible for managing those arrangements.

Your responsibility will be to considerably increase the scale of income generated through
consultancy business, making changes to operations and strategy as required and after agreement
by Directors. The role will report to the Managing Director of ARC Ecological Services Ltd. You
will have the opportunity to work alongside ARC’s specialist staff. You will have an
opportunity to learn from and contribute to ARC’s conservation projects.

We are seeking a highly motivated person  with significant
consultancy experience, and ideally considerable expertise with amphibians and reptiles in a
consultancy setting. Opportunities for training will be provided.

The post is offered for an initial 1-year period, but with the expectation of making the role
permanent depending on personal performance and progress with consultancy development. The
post-holder would be expected to start in September 2024.

Main duties:

  • Line management (currently proposed: one Ecologist post from later in 2024)
  • Managing the day-to-day operation of the consultancy
  • Managing the development of the consultancy
  • Marketing our services, including developing our online presence and attendance at
    conferences
  • Producing fee proposals
  • Quality assurance and sign-off of contract outputs
  • Leading on elements of contract delivery, and overseeing delivery by others, including
    management of sub-contractors
  • Client liaison, report writing and project management
  • Developing good practice through documenting and communicating our projects
  • Liaising with the Directors of ARC Ecological Services

Person specification:

  • Track record in ecological consultancy, demonstrating an ability to secure contracts and deliver them
    to a high standard.
  • Considerable experience with native UK amphibians and reptiles, including survey and
    mitigation methods and an understanding of their ecology and conservation.
  • Experience of routine ecological consultancy tasks, preferably including Preliminary
    Ecological Appraisal, Ecological Impact Assessment, species surveys, Phase 1 habitat surveys.
  • Understanding of land use planning and protected species legislation.
  • Knowledge of Biodiversity Net Gain processes.
  • Have held, or been a named ecologist on, an EPS mitigation licence and a great crested newt
    survey licence (ideally Natural England Level 2 Class Licence).
  • Competence with IT, especially use of Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel and GIS.
  • Excellent report writing and communications skills.
  • Project, financial and staff management experience.
  • At least a first degree in a biological science or other relevant subject.
  • Member of CIEEM, and preferably a Chartered Ecologist.
  • Full, clean UK driving licence, and use of a car.
