DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Chief, Work Programme Coordinator of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), the incumbent’s primary role is to effectively oversee and coordinate the development of the proof-of-concept of the Global Ecosystems Atlas initiative, ensuring the integration and alignment of activities to achieve the project deliverables within the set timelines and budget. The incumbent will perform the following duties:

Project Coordination and Oversight

– Coordinate across all teams working on project deliverables, ensuring alignment with the project’s strategic goals and scientific integrity.
– Act as the central point of contact for all project stakeholders, facilitating communication, and collaboration between the teams involved in the development of the Atlas proof-of-concept.
– Organizing and leading biweekly calls with the project teams to ensure that the project remains on track and that all teams are synchronized in their efforts towards the project milestones.
– Ensure coordination and support of the Ad-hoc Science and Technical Committee.

Strategic Planning and Documentation

– Develop and complete a comprehensive 5-year project document that outlines all phases, expected outcomes, budgeting, work plans, human resources, risk management, governance, and partnerships in detail.
– Ensure that the project documentation is reflective of the requirements needed to scale the proof-of-concept to a complete product, incorporating inputs and documentation from the different project teams.

Resource Management and Mobilization

– Manage project resources effectively, including the allocation of human resources, budget oversight, and ensuring the efficient use of materials and technology.
– Identify, assess, and secure additional resources as needed, including human capital, funding, and technology, to support the successful execution of the Atlas initiative.

Risk Assessment and Mitigation

– Conduct thorough risk assessments for all project stages and develop comprehensive mitigation strategies to address potential challenges and obstacles.
– Regularly update risk management plans to reflect new insights and conditions, ensuring proactive measures are in place to manage uncertainties.

Performance Monitoring and Reporting

– Monitor project performance against established milestones and deliverables, adjusting strategies and plans as necessary to achieve objectives.
– Prepare and present regular progress reports to stakeholders, including the Ad-hoc Science and Technical Committee, donors, and other key stakeholders.
– Carry out other relevant duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Master’s degree or equivalent in Business Management and Administration, International Relations, Political Science, or a closely related field.
Experience
A minimum of 10 years of demonstrated experience in project management in the environmental domain. Experience in managing nature-related projects would be an advantage.
Other requirements
Strong leadership and coordination skills, excellent communication and negotiation abilities, and a proven track record of managing complex projects. Demonstrated ability to take initiative and plan, organizing and managing multiple workloads with minimal direction or supervision. Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to foster diversity and team spirit.
Languages
Excellent knowledge of English (both oral and written). Knowledge of other official languages of WMO would be an advantage.

The working language of the GEO Secretariat is English.

The GEO Secretariat Director may appoint a candidate at a grade below the advertised grade of the post, with the possibility of promotion to that grade within three years of appointment, subject to satisfactory appraisal of performance.Possibility of renewal subject to the availability of funds and pending satisfactory performance after an initial probationary period of one year which can be extended up to a maximum of two years.

Annual post adjustment on initial salary is: US$ 0 (in addition to the net base salary)

Additional Information:
RENUMERATION: The consultant will be employed full time, remote for 9 months.

TRAVEL: Travel may be required as part of the consultant’s duties and will be paid for by the GEO Secretariat.
